Hounds claim seventh straight victim

Box Score

CINCINNATI -- The UIndy women's basketball team (7-2) put its win streak on the line at Division I Cincinnati Monday night and came away with a gritty 50-43 win at Fifth Third Arena.  The Greyhounds, who were led in scoring by Kritsin Turner's 13 points, have now won seven in a row.

The rare regular-season contest with a D-I opponent came about when a sudden opening appeared in the Bearcats' schedule.  The call made to the UIndy coaches' office may be one Cincinnati (6-5) now regrets, however, as the Greyhounds left Fifth Third Arena with a seven-point win.

Down 10-8 midway through the half, the Hounds orchestrated an 11-0 run to take control.  The surge featured a pair of transition buckets, as well as a 3-pointer from freshman Kelly Walter.

The Greyhounds' first-half advantage topped out at nine but could have been greater.  The UIndy offense created multiple open looks for its jump shooters, but for the most part, the shots weren't falling.

After holding UC without a field goal for the final 4:21 of the half, the Hounds finished the first 20 minutes with a 22-16 lead despite shooting just 8-for-29 (.276) from the field and 2-for-10 (.200) from three.

The Hounds kept the pressure on after the break, pushing the lead to double digits on a Kristin Turner triple at the 16:46 mark.

The Greyhounds were relentless in their use of the pick-and-roll, especially in the latter half.  The quintessential play allowed the Hounds the push the lead to 14 with seven-and-a-half minutes left.

The Bearcats would not go away, however, as the home team drilled three triples in a span of 1:06.  Two of the aforementioned jumpers were courtesy of senior Bjonee Reaves, who finished with a game-high 18 points.

With UC creeping to within six with about four minutes to go, sophomore Katy McIntosh earned a big offensive rebound that led to a three from senior Megan Gardner.

Cincy answered right back with yet another 3-pointer to keep it a two-possession game.  However, after Gardner drove the lane to make it 47-39 with 3:08 left, the 'Cats never came closer than seven.

Turner's 13 points matched her season average.  McIntosh, Sydney Weinert and Eliza Wortman all had six rebounds.  Meanwhile, all seven of Gardner's points came in the final four minutes.

With the Christmas holiday right around the corner, the Hounds get a lengthy break before their next game.  UIndy travels to Big Rapids, Mich., on Dec. 30 for a meeting with in-region Ferris State.

Note: Monday's win was the first for the Hounds away from home.
