INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy women's basketball team (5-2, 2-0 GLVC) upped its winning streak to five with a 55-44 win versus visiting Northern Kentucky (4-2, 1-1) Saturday evening. Junior
Sydney Weinert excelled on both ends of the court by amassing nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocks.
As per usual in a match-up versus NKU, the game was a low-scoring affair. Neither team has scored more than 64 points in seven of the last eight meetings.
Even so, the Hounds held their opponents to just 44 points, marking the lowest total scored by an in-conference adversary since Kentucky Wesleyan mustered 42 points in February of 2010.
“We know that NKU is not usually a team that wants to pick up the pace,” said Head Coach
Constantin Popa. “So in the first half especially, we wanted to get them to move a little bit, so we picked them up full court to not let them think a whole lot and not let them communicate with the bench a lot.”
Though NKU topped out at just 24 points in the first half, UIndy only managed the same. The see-saw period featured six ties and eight lead changes, as neither team led by more than four.
The action remained close through much of the second, but UIndy finally earned a cushion with a 12-4 run late in the final half. The surge featured 3-pointers from four different Greyhounds, with
Kristin Turner's triple at the 3:55 mark making it 49-37 Hounds.
When asked about the run, Coach Popa noted: "It was execution. It was patience. It was movement. And that's what I've been preaching to the team.
“The longer we kept them on defense, the better chance we had to get shots or get open lay-ups. We had more patience on offense in the second half and we were able to take advantage of certain situations because of it.”
Nickole Gonser led all players with a career-best 15 points, while also adding eight boards and two steals. Turner scored nine of her 14 points in the second half and freshman
Kelly Walter scored eight points off the bench.
Coming off a school-record 37-point performance Thursday, the Hounds held NKU senior Casse Mogan to 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting.
UIndy hosts the last of six straight home games when Cedarville comes to Nicoson Hall Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern.
