Baseball finishes tough series at Bellarmine with two losses

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Thanks to a defeats of 6-3 and 14-13 at Bellarmine Sunday, the UIndy baseball team (22-12, 11-11 GLVC) was sent home with a four-game losing streak.  The Knights took all four games in the series, with the final win coming in 10 innings.

GAME ONE | Box score
Errors plagued UIndy's efforts in the opener, as the Hounds were charged with a season-high six miscues in the field.  Four came in the sixth inning alone, allowing the Knights (20-16, 12-7) to turn a 3-2 deficit to a 6-3 lead.

Spenser Smith amassed two RBI s without the benefit of a hit, as the third baseman earned a bases-loaded HBP in the fourth and a sac fly in the sixth.  Catcher Brandon Stevens smacked his third homerun of the year with a solo shot in the sixth inning.

Starter Clint Seefeldt (4-1) picked up his first loss of the season after allowing five runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.  He gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out two.

GAME TWO | Box score
After managing only five runs in the previous three games combined versus the Knights, UIndy put up 13 tallies in the series finale.  It wasn't enough, however, as Bellarmine earned a second straight come-from-behind win, thanks in part to a five-run ninth.

The Hounds jumped in front 7-1 after four and a half, but the Knights got right back in it with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

UIndy again pulled away, earning a seemingly-secure 13-8 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.  The Greyhounds could not put the Knights away, however, as BU scored four of its five ninth-inning runs with two outs.

Senior Kaleb Cunningham coaxed a lead-off walk to start the 10th, but three straight ground balls quickly ended the threat.

The Knights again came up with the clutch hit in their final at bat, as shortstop John Lyons' two-out grounder found a hole in the left side of the defense to score pinch runner Trevor Parsons with the game winner.

Senior Aryn Ross (pictured) had a monster game despite the loss, going 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and six driven in.  The UIndy first baseman had a two-run homer in the fourth and a three-run double in the fifth.

Leftfielder Nate Koontz also had a two-run homer, with his coming in the second inning.

The Greyhounds travel to Saint Joseph's Tuesday for a two-game matinee before hosting Northern Kentucky in a four-game series Friday and Saturday.

Note: The six errors in game one were the most by the Greyhounds since they committed six versus Davis & Elkins back on March 16, 2001.
