INDIANAPOLIS --
Senior middle hitter Courtney Anglemyer became just the ninth player in school history to surpass 1,000 career kills to help University of Indianapolis volleyball defeat in-state rival Southern Indiana, 3-1 (21-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-17), on Friday night at Ruth Lilly Center.

Anglemyer reached the milestone on her fourth kill of the match in the second set and finished hitting .400 with seven kills, six digs, four blocks and two aces in the Greyhounds' (7-4, 5-1 GLVC) fifth win in a row. The victory over the Screaming Eagles (6-4, 4-2 GLVC) broke a deadlock for second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division.

Senior Kristina Hefferan led all players with 19 kills and added 15 digs, three blocks, two assists and one ace and she will enter tomorrow afternoon's contest with 993 career kills. Junior Kristina Kerrigan added 17 kills and 12 digs and has 980 career kills.

Freshman Meghan Binkerd passed out 38 assists, while Amy Oldenburg led the Greyhounds with 20 digs. Freshman Julia Watkins led UIndy with six blocks and junior Kourtney Crawford added five blocks, five kills and four digs. Freshman Courtney Roach added 14 digs and served an ace on match point.

Southern Indiana was led by Lauren DeShaney with 17 kills, while Danielle LaGrange had 11 kills, 14 digs and seven blocks. Emily Meyer led all players with six aces and Kayla Heldman posted a match-high 23 digs.

USI actually scored one more point than UIndy, 69.0-68.0, but also had more attack errors, 34-26, and more service errors, 6-3. The Greyhounds hit .150 for the match with 52 kills, while the Eagles finished with 50 kills attacking .088.

Southern Indiana jumped on the Greyhounds by scoring the first five points of the match on the way to taking a nine-point lead, 11-2. UIndy steadily came back, but couldn't pull closer than three points and USI took the early lead, 1-0, after a LaGrange kill, 25-21, immediately after a timeout.

USI finished with 15 kills attacking .106 and UIndy hit .103 with 10 kills. The Screaming Eagles also had three aces.

The second set was back-and-forth with 11 ties and seven lead changes before it was decided. Southern Indiana took another early lead, 4-1, before UIndy came back to take its first lead of the match, 7-6. It was short-lived as Southern Indiana built a six-point lead, 20-14, late in the set. The Eagles followed that with four consecutive errors, including a block by Watkins and Binkerd, to jump start a 9-0 run that put UIndy up three, 23-20, after a kill by Watkins.

The teams traded points to give UIndy set point, 24-21, but USI scored the next three to save three set points. Kerrigan had a kill to give UIndy another set point, 25-24, but then USI scored two in a row for set point, 26-25. A kill by Crawford and block from Crawford and Anglemyer set up a fifth set point, 27-26, but Southern Indiana held strong. UIndy came right back with an Anglemyer kill and then put USI away with a Kerrigan kill, 29-27.

UIndy hit .180 with 16 kills and seven errors, including four kills each by Anglemyer, Hefferan and Kerrigan. The Eagles countered with 14 kills and 12 errors to hit .038.

The Greyhounds maintained their momentum after the 10-minute break by taking a 10-4 lead to open the third set.  The Screaming Eagles came back to tie, 13-13, but couldn't take the lead as Hefferan countered with back-to-back kills. Southern Indiana couldn't get closer than one the rest of the way and a block by Anglemyer and Kerrigan on set point, 25-22, put UIndy up two sets to one.

Both teams had six errors, while UIndy had one more kill, 14-13, led by Hefferan hitting .562 with nine kills. Each team had one ace, but Southern Indiana had two more errors, 3-1.

Southern Indiana used a 4-0 run to take an early lead, 10-6, that forced UIndy to burn a timeout. Kerrigan answered with a kill after the timeout to put Anglemyer at the service line to direct an 11-0 run that put UIndy up seven, 17-10. Anglemyer had a pair of aces before Southern Indiana called its first timeout. Kerrigan then posted four kills in a row to make USI use its last timeout. The Screaming Eagles never got closer than four and UIndy closed the match with a block by Hefferan and Anglemyer and an ace by Roach on the first match point, 25-17.

UIndy hit .125 with 12 kills, six by Kerrigan, while limiting USI to .049 attacking with eight kills and six errors.

The Greyhounds wrap their five-match homestand on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Kentucky Wesleyan (4-9, 0-5 GLVC). The Panthers played at St. Joseph's on Friday night.
