Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy women's basketball team (11-3, 5-1 GLVC) set a new team record for blocked shots* in Saturday's 77-56 home win against Missouri-St. Louis.  Junior Sydney Weinert notched seven of the team's 15 blocks, while also recording 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Weinert's performance marked her second double-double in the last three games.  The IPFW transfer went a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line, while her seven rejections came one shy of tying the program's single-game record.

Junior Kristin Turner led all scorers with 21 points; sophomore Katy McIntosh had 12 points, eight boards and two steals; and junior Nickole Gonser added nine points, five rebounds and two blocks.

UMSL's Devonna Smith went for 19 points and 20 rebounds.

UIndy held the visiting Tritons (6-8, 1-5) to 31 percent from the floor on the day and led by as many as 27 points.

“It was another good win for our team,” said Head Coach Constantin Popa.  “We're moving in the right direction, but we still have a lot of things to work on.  We got out-rebounded again, unfortunately, but you try to take the positives out of it.

“It's nice to see that the scoring was a little more balanced than some of the other games and we did a good job of making our free throws.”

The Greyhounds hit a season-high 34 free throws, good for the highest number in the conference so far this season.  UIndy missed just five of its 39 attempts, resulting in an .872 percentage.

Added Popa: “It was a pretty physical game today.  The number of free throws we shot really shows that.  We shot almost 40 free throws, but when we had to hit them, we hit them.”

The Hounds used a pair of runs to take control early.  UIndy scored to game's first 10 points, as the visitors didn't get on the board for nearly five minutes.  Then after the Tritons trimmed it to three at 14-11, the Greyhounds managed an 11-2 flurry to go up 25-13 at the nine-minute mark.

UMSL corralled 14 offensive rebounds in the first half, but still trailed by 12 at the break.  UIndy offset the rebounding disparity with a 52.4-percent field goal percentage and a 14-for-17 effort from the line.

The Hounds continued to struggle on the defensive glass in the second half, as UMSL finished with an alarming 29 offensive boards, resulting in 17 second-chance points.

Nevertheless, the Tritons never threatened in the second half, trailing by no less than 17 the final 16 minutes of the game.

“It was a good win," concluded Popa, "but sometimes towards the end of the game like today, the level of concentration is a little bit different when you're up 20 points compared to when it's a close game.  It shouldn't be that way, but that's what happens sometimes when you have young players coming off the bench and the game is pretty much over by then.

“We're going to learn from that though.  We had a good conversion in the locker room about it.  We need to realize that we have to stay focused and finish the game strong and not allow people chances to get back in the game.”

Saturday's final puts a bow on interdivision play, as it is all GLVC East opponents from here on out.  The Hounds are right back at it Monday evening, hosting Saint Joseph's at 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

Produced by HomeTown Television, the SJC game will be available online at hometownsportsindiana.com and will be televised via tape-delay on WRTV 6.2 HTSN.
