UIndy remains atop division with 66-49 road win

Box Score

EVANSVILLE, Ind.-  The UIndy women's basketball team (13-3, 7-1 GLVC) maintained its one-game lead in the GLVC East Division with a 66-49 win at Southern Indiana Thursday night.  The Greyhounds dictated the tempo the majority of the evening and led by double-digits for the final 28-and-a-half minutes of play.

Led by Kristin Turner's game-high 23 points, UIndy notched its 13th win in the last 14 games.  Turner, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, has averaged 23.6 points per game over the previous seven contests.  She also added four rebounds, four assists and two steals on the night.

A slow start plagued both squads, as neither scored more than three points in the opening four-and-a-half minutes.   However, after USI earned its first and ultimately only lead at 7-5, the Hounds engineered a crippling 23-6 run to put a vice grip on the proceedings.

The scoring flurry featured 14 points from Turner, who hit three 3-pointers in the first half.  The junior guard finished the first 20 minutes with a game-high 18 points.

The UIndy lead settled at 36-23 at the break.  Both teams hit 11 field goals in the first half, though Southern Indiana took eight more shots.  In addition, the Greyhounds cashed in 19 points on the Eagles' 14 first-half turnovers.

USI (6-10, 0-8) never got closer than 11 the rest of the way, but manage to corral 19 offensive rebounds to keep it respectable.  Sophomore Stephanie Carpenter led the Eagles with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting.  The rest of the squad combined to shot a meager 26.5 percent (13-of-49) from the floor.

UIndy junior Nickole Gonser's 15 points matched her season high for the second straight game.  Gonser, who hit three 3-pointers on the night, has scored 15 points on four occasions this year.

Sydney Weinert and Megan Gardner were each credited with four steals, while Weinert also recorded six blocks.

“It was a great effort tonight,” remarked Head Coach Constantin Popa.  “This was a really good win, especially being on the road.  I'm really proud of the girls and the way they played, and I'm proud of the coaching staff.

“We gave them a couple different looks defensively with our zone and our man-to-man, and that worked out well for us, and offensively, I thought we moved the ball well.  We made the extra pass and got some good looks.”

With losses tonight by both Missouri S&T and Drury, the win not only kept the Hounds in first place in the GLVC East, but also lifted them into the league's top spot overall.  The top four seeds, regardless of division, will earn a bye in the upcoming GLVC Tournament.

The Greyhounds will cross the Ohio River to face the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers Saturday afternoon.  Tip time Owensboro, Ky., is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern.
