Streak snapped with 86-75 loss at Quincy

Box Score

QUINCY, Ill.- On the door step of a double-digit win streak, the UIndy women's basketball team (9-3, 3-1 GLVC) fell short Saturday with an 86-75 loss at Quincy University.  The final score ended the Greyhounds' streak of nine straight wins, while squandering a 32-point effort from junior Kristin Turner.

Turner's point total marked the third consecutive game that the junior guard set a new career high.  It was the first 30-point effort by a Greyhound this season and just the 36th such game by a Hound since records became available in 1982-83.

The turning point came in the first half when the Lady Hawks (8-4, 3-1) orchestrated a crippling 18-2 run, turning a five-point deficit into a 38-27 advantage.

“We dug ourselves a big hole in the first half,” explained Head Coach Constantin Popa.  “They shot lights out, especially there in the first half.  They played a really good game and we struggled hitting our shots.  Eventually you pay the price.”

Quincy finished the game with 10 made 3-pointers, while shooting 9-for-18 in the first 20 minutes.

“That's the second game in a row that teams hit over 40 percent against us from the outside,” continued Popa.  “We've got to get out there a little more and put some pressure on the ball and contest those shots.”

Nevertheless, UIndy mustered a frantic comeback late in the contest.  After trailing by as many as 18 with 6:39 left, the Hounds ran off eight straight points to force their way back in the game.

With just over a minute to go, a 3-point attempt by sophomore Katy McIntosh would have cut it to four, but like many of the Greyhounds' jumpers Saturday, the shot was off the mark.

UIndy would not get any closer than seven, as Quincy hit its free throws down the stretch to stave off the charge.

“To win games, you've got to make shots,” Popa concluded. “That's the way I look at things.  Obviously you've got to play some defense, there's no doubt about it, but bottom line, you've got to hit your shots.

“If you get open looks, you've got to hit them.  That's what Quincy did today and that's what we didn't do.”

Turner added four rebounds and two assists to supplement her 32-point outburst.  Sydney Weinert and Nickole Gonser each scored 10 points to join her in double figures, while Weinert made it a double-double with 10 boards.

Dajana Jovanovic came off the bench for a season-high 25 minutes, adding seven points and six rebounds.

Saturday marked the end of the Greyhounds' season-high four-game road swing, as the team returns to Nicoson Hal Thursday, Jan. 12 to host Maryville.
