AURORA, Ill. – The No. 9 UIndy volleyball team pushed its new winning streak to a pair by closing out the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover with a victory, 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20), over Wayne State on Saturday afternoon at the Great Lakes Center.
The Greyhounds (19-3) hit .350 on offense and showed off their blocking skills with 12 against the Warriors (13-7), the nation's top-blocking team entering the weekend. This is the second win this season by the Greyhounds over WSU.
"Our communication on the block in the front row was huge to slow down their offense," head coach
Jody Rogers. "Our blocking continues to get better and some of that just comes from the reps our players are getting now that we are 22 matches into the season."
Senior
Kourtney Crawford led the UIndy attack by hitting .571 with a match-high 13 kills, while sophomore
Arielle Knafel added 10 kills, four digs and four blocks.
Junior
Brittany Anglemyer hit .538 with eight kills and picked up seven blocks, including one solo, while setter
Meghan Binkerd hit .545 with seven kills, 37 assists, six digs, four blocks and two aces. Senior
Amy Oldenburg led UIndy with 11 digs. Binkerd and senior
Kristina Kerrigan were both named to the GLVC Crossover All-Tournament Team.
The Warriors scored the first two points of the match, but then the Greyhounds took over with a 9-1 run to go up by six, 9-3. Wayne State never got closer than four points the rest of the way and UIndy took the opening set, 25-19, on Crawford's kill as UIndy hit .405 with 17 kills in the opening set.
UIndy was up 3-0 and 6-2 in the second set, but WSU went on the early run to counter and take a two-point lead, 11-9. UIndy turned it back around with an 8-2 run to regain a four-point lead, 17-13, with a three-point run by Crawford with a block assist and back-to-back kills. UIndy continued to pull away and won the set, 25-18, on a 4-0 run, including back-to-back Binkerd aces to end the set.
The third set proved to be the tightest with eight ties and five lead changes until UIndy used a 7-0 run to turn a one-point deficit into a seven-point lead, 18-12, as freshman
Hailey Brown had three aces during the run. The Warriors were done after that as Watkins and Binkerd teamed to end the match, 25-20, with a block.
