INDIANAPOLIS – In a meeting pitting the two teams with the most wins in the Midwest Region, it was No. 10 UIndy that took out Cedarville, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-17), at Ruth Lilly Center on Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds (20-3, 9-0 GLVC) reached the 20-win plateau for the 14th season in a row by taking down the Lady Jackets (21-5, 3-0 GMAC) with a defensive effort that limited them to -.029 hitting with 24 kills and 27 errors.
Sophomore
Julia Watkins had four blocks, in addition to five kills, while
Amy Oldenburg led all players with 11 digs.
On the offense,
Brittany Anglemyer hit a career-high .875 with seven kills in eight swings, while
Arielle Knafel led all players with eight kills.
The Greyhounds hit .242 as a team with
Meghan Binkerd picking up 25 assists, seven digs and three kills, while
Karsey King added seven assists and two digs off the bench.
Cedarville missed its first three attacks to start the match and forced its head coach to call an immediate timeout. That seemed to steady the Lady Jackets as they came back to even the set at 11, but then UIndy took over with four kills in a row by Watkins, Knafel,
Kourtney Crawford and Knafel again. That forced the second Cedarville timeout, which again kept the team hanging around. UIndy led by two, 20-18, when a kill by
Kristina Kerrigan jump-started a 5-0 run to end the set on another kill by Kerrigan.
The teams traded the first two points of the second set, but then UIndy scored four in a row for another early lead, 5-1, and a Cedarville timeout. This one didn't slow down the Greyhounds as they steadily began to pull away to win the set comfortably, 25-12, behind a 5-0 run with
Kenzie Bruggeman at the service line to clinch.
The third set was more dominant play by UIndy as they led 10-1 after a solo block by Watkins. A later kill by Knafel put the Greyhounds up 12, 19-7, and they were able to play everyone on the roster to finish up the match, 25-17.
The Greyhounds will remain at Ruth Lilly Center when they return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend. UIndy hosts Drury (11-12, 3-6 GLVC) on Saturday at 5 p.m. and then the two division leaders meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday when Missouri S&T (13-9, 9-0 GLVC) visits for the Pink Match.
