Box Score
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 9 UIndy volleyball team earned its 14th win in a row by ending Rockhurst's seven-match winning, 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23), at Mason-Halpin Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (17-2, 9-0 GLVC) remain undefeated in the Great Lakes Valley Conference by earning their eighth sweep of the league campaign and handing the Hawks (15-3, 7-2 GLVC) just their third loss of the season.
Senior
Kristina Kerrigan led all players with 17 kills, in addition to nine digs, while senior
Kourtney Crawford added 10 kills of her own. Juniors
Brittany Anglemyer and
Kenzie Bruggeman each had nine kills, which was a career high for Bruggeman. Anglemyer hit .444 with four digs, three blocks and two aces, while Bruggeman chipped in 10 digs.
Sophomore Kim Trojan led the Greyhounds with 11 digs and two aces, while senior
Amy Oldenburg also tallied 10 digs.
Sophomore
Meghan Binkerd spread the ball around with 50 assists, which is tied for the most-ever in UIndy rally-scoring history in a three-set match. She also had five digs, three blocks and three kills as UIndy hit .273 as a team.
The Hawks hit .235 as a team with 13 less kills than UIndy (53-40), but did lead the way with nine blocks. The Greyhounds had 10 more digs (50-40) and five aces, while not allowing a single one for Rockhurst.
UIndy scored the first three points of the match and jumped ahead by five, 8-3, after a Crawford kill to force a RU timeout. The Hawks responded with a 9-4 run to tie the score at a dozen, but a kill by Bruggeman and block by Kerrigan and
Julia Watkins started a 6-1 run to get the lead back to five, 18-13. Rockhurst came back within two, 21-19, but a bad set by Whitney Kostal stopped the momentum and a Kerrigan kill ended the set, 25-21, on the second set point.
Rockhurst scored three of the first four points of the second set until UIndy went on a 6-1 run for a three-point lead, 7-4, after a Watkins kill. Moments later, UIndy went on an 11-3 run to build its lead to 10, 19-9, after a Crawford kill. The Greyhounds made things interesting with a bevy of errors to let the Hawks close within four, 22-18. Rockhurst then committed two miscues of its own and Trojan's ace on set point, 25-18, ended the set.
Three kills by Kerrigan helped UIndy rattle off the first five points of the third set and force the early stoppage by Rockhurst. The timeout seemed to calm the Hawks and they steadily started coming back and eventually took a two-point lead, 18-16. With a chance to extend the lead, Victoria Mahl committed the only service error of the match for RU and that started a 4-0 UIndy run to go back up two, 20-18, after Binkerd and Anglemyer's block.
The Hawks responded with a 4-1 run to regain the lead, 22-21, but UIndy tied the score on Kerrigan's kill, which was immediately followed by an ace from Anglemyer and RU attack error for match point, 24-22. Rockhurst saved the first with a kill, but UIndy went back to Kerrigan for the termination on the next for the win, 25-23.
Rockhurst was led by Maggie Hummel with 12 kills hitting .480 and Katie Loescher had 10 kills. Kostal tallied 38 assists, Mahl led all players with 12 digs and Emily Ready led all players with five blocks.
The Greyhounds and Hawks will now wait until this evening when the final pairings are announced for next weekend's Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. Each team will get three matches against competition from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the largest collegiate volleyball tournament in the country.
