ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Only three teams had found a way to defeat No. 10 UIndy volleyball this season and none in the Great Lakes Valley Conference until Lewis fought back from trailing by a set to hold serve at home, 3-2 (25-27, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 17-15), on Friday night.
The Greyhounds (25-4, 14-1 GLVC) fell to 3-4 in five-set matches in falling to the Flyers (20-9, 12-4 GLVC) for the third season in a row at their gym.
The Greyhounds trailed by four, 8-4, early in the fifth set and were still down three, 10-7, when
Brittany Anglemyer scored off the block and Lewis committed back-to-back errors. Lewis came back with the next two points, but two kills by
Kristina Kerrigan and a block from
Kourtney Crawford and
Julia Watkins tied the score at 13.
Meghan Binkerd missed the next serve wide to give Lewis match point, but Kerrigan scored hitting a kill long off the top of the block to tie. UIndy then earned a match point of its own as
Julia Watkins re-directed
Arielle Knafel's blocked attack to an open spot on the floor, 15-14.
Lewis saved immediately as Jillian Carlberg tooled a slide attack off the UIndy block. On the next point, Knafel missed a shot down the line wide and on match point, Crawford's attack went into the top of the net, 17-15.
Kerrigan led the way for UIndy with her second 20-20 match of the season with 22 kills on a career-high 74 swings and 22 digs. Knafel added 18 kills, while Crawford had 14 and Anglemyer contributed 10.
Binkerd led all players with 63 assists and a season-high 16 digs, while
Kenzie Bruggeman had a career-high 23 digs to lead all players.
Amy Oldenburg added another 21 digs for the Greyhounds, while Kim Trojan tallied 10.
Carly Perschnick and Jen Krumwiede each had 18 kills to lead the Flyers.
Overall, UIndy had 74 kills and hit .176, while the Flyers hit .198 with 65 kills. The Flyers picked up additional points at the net with 12 blocks to six for UIndy. The Flyers were also better at the service line with two aces and three errors, while UIndy missed seven serves and had one ace.
The Hounds opened the match with a 5-1 lead before Lewis stormed back with a 8-1 run to take the lead, 9-6. The Flyers stayed in front and kept a two-point lead, 19-17, when Crawford's kill and Perschnick's error started a 4-1 run to put UIndy in front, 21-20, on Binkerd's kill. Lewis scored the next point, but then UIndy had two more in a row, 23-21, but Krumwiede answered with back-to-back kills. Kerrigan came back with a kill for set point, but Anglemyer's serve was long to keep Lewis alive. The Flyers took advantage with a block, 25-24, for their own set point, but Kerrigan was able to find the floor with Lewis scrambling to save. The Flyers then committed a pair of errors to give the opening set to UIndy, 27-25.
Lewis started the second set with a 5-2 lead, but UIndy steadily came back and took a two-point advantage, 14-12, after Lewis errors. The Flyers didn't hesitate and went on a 4-1 run to regain the lead, 16-15. The Greyhounds were able to earn four ties, the last at 19, but never the lead as Lewis took advantage of some sloppy play by UIndy to win the set on a 6-0 run, 25-19.
The 5-2 lead to start the set went to UIndy in the third and eventually climbed to four, 13-9, after a Crawford kill. Lewis scored two in a row after and head coach
Jody Rogers used a quick timeout. Crawford had a kill after the stoppage, but Lewis then rattled off two of its own to pull within one, 14-13. Knafel turned it back around for UIndy with three kills in a 4-0 run to put the Greyhounds in control, 18-13. Lewis were never able to threaten and Knafel put down the final point on a big swing cross court, 25-19. Kerrigan was also crucial in the third frame with a .533 attack percentage and nine kills.
Kills by Crawford and Watkins gave UIndy the first two points of the fourth, but in short order it was Lewis in front, 6-5, and the lead wouldn't go back. A 5-0 run put the Flyers up six, 13-7, and the Greyhounds were fighting from behind. UIndy wouldn't go away and pulled within two, 22-20, but Perschnick stopped the rally with a kill and Knafel missed an attack to give Lewis four set points, 24-20. Knafel saved the first two with kills, but it was Perschnick again to extend the match to five, 25-22.
UIndy heads to Wisconsin-Parkside (18-9, 7-8 GLVC) for a 4 p.m. ET first serve tomorrow in its final regular season road match of the season.
