The Greyhounds limited the Hawks (28-7) to only .057 attacking with 29 kills and 22 errors after falling to this same team two weeks ago in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament semifinals. On the other side of the net, Binkerd had UIndy hitting at a .301 clip with 48 kills and 14 errors.
Rockhurst was led by freshmen Katie Loescher and Alyssa Arnold with eight kills each, while freshman setter Whitney Kostal led the team with 26 assists and nine digs.
UIndy was hyped from the start and raced to a 9-3 lead in the opening set after Crawford and Watkins blocked Maggie Hummel to force a Rockhurst timeout. A kill by Bruggeman pushed the lead to eight, 12-4, but the Hawks answered with three in a row to keep things interesting. Bruggeman had two more kills around an ace from
Kimberly Trojan to push the lead back to eight, 15-7, and UIndy cruised to the opening set win, 25-14. UIndy hit .385 with 17 kills in the first, while Rockhurst was held to .073 attacking and eight kills.
Another fast start had Rockhurst calling timeout with UIndy holding a five-point lead, 8-3. The Greyhounds pushed the lead to seven, 13-6, but the Hawks scored three quick points to force UIndy head coach
Jody Rogers to call timeout. The Greyhounds responded with back-to-back blocks by Watkins, one with Binkerd and the other with Kerrigan, to make Rockhurst head coach Tracy Rietzke use his last timeout, 16-10. The Greyhounds remained up seven, 22-15, after a kill by Anglemyer and went on to close out the set, 25-20, with a block by Watkins and Crawford on Hummel. UIndy hit .286 in the set, while holding the Hawks to .044 hitting.
Rockhurst never led at any point in the match and only tied the score three times, two of which came at 1-all and 2-all in the third set. A block by Watkins and Kerrigan, Binkerd ace and Kerrigan kill put UIndy up three, 5-2, and the Hawks were fighting from behind again. The lead moved to six, 9-3, after a Crawford kill and
Shelby Holland ace, but the Hawks hung around to close within two, 15-13, after a block by Hummel and co-GLVC Freshman of the Year Kelsey Stratman. UIndy responded with kills by Anglemyer, Kerrigan and Watkins to go back up five, 18-13, and ended the match on Bruggeman's left side blast, 25-19. UIndy added 17 more kills in the third, while Rockhurst had eight kills and hit .056.
UIndy improves to 10-6 in NCAA Tournament play and advances to the regional semifinals for the sixth season in a row on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
