SOMERS, Wis.- The UIndy women's basketball team (17-8, 11-6 GLVC) cut an 11-point second-half deficit to one Saturday afternoon but came up on the short end of a 72-65 decision at 16th-ranked Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Greyhounds corralled a season-high 18 offensive rebounds, but couldn't overcome a season-low 34-percent showing from the floor.
“We didn't shot the ball well today,” admitted Head Coach
Constantin Popa. “We missed a lot of easy lay-ups and a lot of easy shots so our shooting percentage wasn't where it should be.”
Wisconsin-Parkside (21-4, 14-3), ranked 16th in the nation and second in the region, never trailed in the game. The Rangers built double-digit leads at the start of both halves, including on 10-0 advantage to open the game.
UIndy battled back to tie it at 22 all, but later fell behind 37-26 with 19 minutes to go in the game. The Greyhounds would again bounce back, pulling to within one at the 7:43 mark and again with four minutes to go, but the visitors could not quite get over the hump.
“We dug ourselves a hole a couple times and fought back hard to get back in it,” said Popa, “but sometimes you just have to suck it up and make more (defensive) stops when it counts. We just weren't able to do that.”
Three Greyhounds reached double figures, including
Katy McIntosh, who finished with a team-high 19 points. Junior
Kristin Turner managed 17 points, sophomore
Eliza Wortman had 12 points and six rebounds and sophomore
Dajana Jovanovic added eight points and eight boards off the bench.
The Rangers were led by their inside-outside combo of Jadee Rooney and Brittany Beyers, who had 22 and 23 points, respectively.
With both the conference and national tournaments quickly approaching, the Hounds travel to Saint Joseph's in the regular-season finale Thursday. Tip time from Rensselaer, Ind., is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
Note: UIndy entered the week ranked seventh in the latest Midwest Region poll. The region's top eight teams will qualify for the NCAA Tournament Mar. 9-12.
