Women's tennis wins intra-city showdown with Marian, 8-1

The University of Indianapolis women's tennis team, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II Midwest Region, defeated its neighbor, Marian, ranked No. 25 in NAIA, 8-1, at the UIndy Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Maggie Ashby and Alena Perez-Majul earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles for the Greyhounds (2-1) against the Knights (12-3), while Brooke Boyts and Kasey Land took an 8-4 decision at second doubles.

UIndy won all six singles matches in straight sets, but had to win a trio of tiebreakers to do so and a pair of 6-4 sets.

Freshman Kelsey Matthews won a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles, while Taylor Eckert won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Perez-Majul completed the sweep of top spots with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1.

Ashby at No. 2 singles, Meghan Teunis at No. 4 and Rachel Barger at fifth singles all won tiebreakers to win their matches.

The Greyhounds are back at the UIndy Tennis Center next Friday at 4 p.m. to play No. 25 Grand Valley State.
