RENSSELAER, Ind.- With a 30-point output Thursday night, UIndy junior
Kristin Turner notched the program's seventh-ever 500-point season, but the Greyhound women's basketball team (17-9, 11-7 GLVC) dropped its regular-season finale, 86-70, at Saint Joseph's.
The Pumas (14-12, 8-10) shot a healthy 49 percent from the floor and drained 11 3-pointers, with the latter good for a season high by a UIndy opponent.
"(St. Joseph's) just shot lights-out tonight," said UIndy Head Coach
Constantin Popa. "We couldn't stop them with man or zone (defense). Everything we tried didn't quite work.
“They pretty much beat us in every aspect of the game. Everything we did, they did better. They beat us on the boards. They out-hustled us, unfortunately, and they out-played us.
"Somehow we couldn't find the strength and the discipline to overcome."
In the final home game of her collegiate career, SJC senior Montrell Mills was a force for the Pumas, as the 5-5 guard amassed 22 points and 12 rebounds. Teammates Tatiana Ortiz, Britney Cruse and Jasmyne Reynolds each had 16 points.
The Hounds started a dreadful 21 percent from the field, missing 22 of their first 28 field goal attempts. The result was a 17-point Puma advantage at the half's final media timeout, leading to an eventual 43-28 count at the break.
"We didn't have a very good performance on offense again," added Popa. "We couldn't finish plays. We didn't have enough people step up unfortunately, and we missed a lot of easy lay-ups and a lot of easy shots and the shooting percentage showed that.
"We're not going to win a whole lot of games when we shot in the 30s from the floor."
UIndy had a bit more success offensively in the second half, putting up 42 points in the final 20 minutes. After St. Joseph's earned a game-high 18-point lead with 16:22 to go, the Hounds scored eight straight to cut it to 10.
Later, a three-point play from Turner at the five-minute mark pulled the Greyhounds within nine, but the home Pumas answered with a big three from Cruse and solid free throw shooting down the stretch.
"It's a tough loss," surmised Popa. "It hurt us in the GLVC standings and also in NCAA consideration.
"Regardless of who we play Sunday (in the GLVC Tournament first round), we have to play better than tonight. We have to make more stops."
Turner led all scorers with 30 points, bringing her season total to 509. She also added four assists and three steals.
Sophomore
Katy McIntosh was the only other Hound in double figures, as she finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior
Megan Gardner, who nailed a 50-footer at the halftime buzzer, finished with nine points.
Junior
Nickole Gonser grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as one of five Greyhounds with at least six boards.
The Greyhounds start their quest for a Great Lakes Valley Conference title Sunday afternoon when they host Bellarmine. The first-round conference tourney match-up between the seventh-seeded Hounds and the 10th-seeded Knights will tip at 3 p.m. Eastern.
Note: The Hounds began last year's GLVC Tourney as the No. 8 seed and advanced all the way to the finals.
