INDIANAPOLIS --
The University of Indianapolis women's tennis team took the early lead, but couldn't hang on in falling to No. 25 Grand Valley State, 5-4, at the UIndy Tennis Center on Friday evening.

The regionally-ranked ninth Greyhounds (2-2) started by sweeping the doubles against the regionally-ranked second Lakers (14-3) to take control, but then lost 5-of-6 singles matches to drop the match.

In doubles, Brooke Boyts and Kasey Land were first off the court with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, followed by Maggie Ashby and Alena Perez-Majul with an 8-3 victory at first doubles. Taylor Eckert and Meghan Teunis were in control at No. 3 doubles, but had to withstand a late GVSU rally to win 8-6.

With the women splitting the UIndy Tennis Center with the men also playing Grand Valley State, singles started with No. 1-3 on the court. Freshman Kelsey Matthews defeated Leah Dancz, the No. 19 singles player in the Midwest, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to give the Greyhounds the 4-2 lead with only one more win needed to secure victory. The Lakers won in straight sets at each of the top two positions.

Teunis at No. 4 and Eckert at No. 5 both fell in straight sets to let the Lakers even the match, 4-4, with junior Rachel Barger remaining on the court for UIndy. Barger won the first set, 6-3, against Allison Fecko, but couldn't maintain the momentum as she won only two more games in the remaining two sets to fall 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

UIndy is back in action with another key match against regional No. 4 Drury at 10 a.m. Sunday at the UIndy Tennis Center.
