INDIANAPOLIS -- The UIndy women's tennis team welcomed fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member Drury to the UIndy Tennis Center Sunday in a non-conference match-up, falling 6-3 in a rematch from last year's GLVC Tournament quarterfinals.
The Panthers (7-0), ranked fourth in the Midwest Region, had to forfeit third doubles and sixth singles with only five healthy players available to play against the regionally ninth-ranked Greyhounds (2-3).
Already trailing, 2-0, with the forfeits, the Panthers were able to win 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and 8-4 at No. 2 to even things up.
With both the men's and women's teams competing simultaneously, only the top three matches took the court to begin singles. Freshman
Kelsey Matthews won her third match in a row to keep UIndy in the contest with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against Stefanie Monsch at No. 3.
The Panthers won at the top two singles to remain in the lead, 4-3, but left an opening in singles as
Meghan Teunis at No. 4 and
Claire Liles at No. 5 took the court for UIndy. Teunis stayed close, but couldn't get past Jelena Schaeftlmeier, the 14th-ranked singles player in the Midwest, 6-3, 6-4. Abbey Sharpe closed out the match with the 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5.
The Greyhounds have two matches next weekend with the third-ranked team in the region, Wayne State, on Friday at 6 p.m. and Johnson County-neighbor Franklin on Sunday at 10 a.m.
