INDIANAPOLIS --
The UIndy women's tennis team fought to the finish before falling to No. 30 Wayne State, 6-3, at the UIndy Tennis Center on Friday evening.

The Warriors (14-2) needed a couple of three-set victories in singles to hold off the Greyhounds (2-4), ranked ninth in the Midwest.

Wayne State's pair of top six regionally-ranked doubles teams won at No. 1 and No. 2, but the pair of freshman Kelsey Matthews and senior Meghan Teunis won 8-5 at No. 3 for UIndy in their first-ever match together. Matthews was actually playing in her first collegiate doubles match after a standout singles career in high school.

The Greyhounds kept up the pressure in singles as Kasey Land won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles in her first appearance in the dual match singles line-up this season, while Taylor Eckert took a 6-1, 6-2 decision at No. 6.

Teunis played a tight match at No. 4 before falling in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7) looking for the match sweep, while Kristina Goranskaya, the No. 4 singles player in the region, defeated Alena Perez-Majul of UIndy, the No. 18 singles player in the region, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1.

The drama came in matches at second and third singles. Matthews battled Yahsha Moore, the No. 20 Midwest singles player, for three sets before coming up short 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, while senior Maggie Ashby was in a struggle at No. 2. The senior split the first two sets against Daniela Garcia-Diaz, the region's 17th-ranked player, before the Warrior won in a superbreaker 5-7, 7-6 (6), (10-7).

UIndy plays its final match before heading for its trip to Florida on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Franklin.
