Greyhounds pitch shutout to take GLVC opener

The UIndy women's tennis team, ranked sixth in the Midwest, shut out in-state rival St. Joseph's, 9-0, in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the UIndy Tennis Center.

The Greyhounds (8-5, 1-0 GLVC) started by sweeping the doubles with Claire Liles and Kelsey Matthews winning 8-0 at No. 3, followed by Maggie Ashby and Alena Perez-Majul with an 8-1 win at the top spot. Brooke Boyts and Kasey Land fought back from a 6-3 deficit to emerge victorious at No. 2, 9-8 (5), in a tiebreaker.

UIndy continued to handle its business in singles against the Pumas (11-7, 0-1 GLVC) as Perez-Majul and Ashby both finished 2-0 on the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 and 6-0, 6-0 whitewash at No. 2 for Ashby.

Matthews only dropped one game to down Natalie Burgeson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, while Meghan Teunis took a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 4. Taylor Eckert was dominant in the first set at No. 5, but had to bounce back from dropping the second to defeat Katie Guernsey 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (3). Rachel Barger closed out the sweep by downing Emily Claeys 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Greyhounds are back in action next weekend by heading to Marion, Ind., to play Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at noon before resuming conference play at Lewis on Sunday at 1 p.m.
