INDIANAPOLIS- A doubleheader split versus Bellarmine Sunday gave the 26th-ranked UIndy baseball team (28-11, 18-6 GLVC) its fourth series win in four tries versus GLVC East opponents this season. After a sweep of the visiting Knights Saturday, the Greyhounds dropped game one 4-1 before notching an 11-6 victory in the capper.
Before the games, UIndy Head Coach
Gary Vaught and the rest of the Hounds hosted Riley Hospital patient Braden Tamosaitis and his family. Braden and his sister Sierra each threw out a ceramonial first pitch, while donations to Riley Hospital for Children were accepted at the Greyhound Park gates.
GAME 1 (7 inn.)
All four Bellarmine runs were unearned, as the Hounds hurt themselves with a couple of early errors.
The Knights (20-20, 12-12) plated three runs in the first, with an error and two wild pitches contributing to the rally. Consequently, junior pitcher
Clint Seefeldt (1-2) was chased out of the game after recording just two outs.
Two more errors helped charge reliever
Phil Wheeler with an unearned tally in the second, but the junior righthander allowed just one hit in the three subsequent frames to finish with one run allowed in 4.1 IP.
The Hounds' lone run came in the fifth when center fielder
Matt Maringer touched home on a
Brandon Stevens sac fly.
GAME 2 (9 inn.)
The Hounds were no-hit through 5 2/3 innings before exploding for five runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Third baseman
Tyler O'Daniel and outfielder
Adam Rusche combined for six RBIs in the two frames to help UIndy turn a 4-1 deficit into a big lead.
First baseman
Jake Hartley chipped in a pair of hits while scoring twice and driving in two.
All told, UIndy managed just five hits in the nine-inning second game, but the home team parlayed its hits with 10 walks and four Bellarmine errors to produce 11 runs.
Senior hurler
Patrick Kraft, like Seefedlt in the previous game, made his first weekend start of the season, but contrary the Seefedlt's outing, Kraft gave the Greyhounds 4 1/3 innings while giving up four runs (one earned) and zero walks.
It was senior
Chris Saroff (1-1) that garnered the decision, however, as the Hounds' go-to reliever got the game's final seven outs to pick up the win.
UIndy returns to East-leading North Kentucky Tuesday to make up a rainout from last weekend. The two split a doubleheader at NKU back on Apr. 15.
