INDIANAPOLIS – Senior
Kristina Kerrigan had 17 kills and hit .353 as she moved into second all-time at the University of Indianapolis in career kills with 1,465 in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-23) sweep by the No. 9 Greyhounds over in-state rival Saint Joseph's.
Setter
Meghan Binkerd added 36 assists, while freshman
Karsey King came off the bench and added eight as the Greyhounds (9-2, 3-0 GLVC) won their sixth in a row and fourth by sweep in the mid-week Great Lakes Valley Conference encounter. UIndy finished hitting .416 in the match with 48 kills and limited the Pumas (3-9, 0-3 GLVC) to 26 kills on .165 attacking.
"We did what we were supposed to do tonight," head coach
Jody Rogers said. "The people that needed to execute were able to do so at a very high level and maintain focus throughout the match."
Junior
Brittany Anglemyer hit .667 with eight kills, three digs, two aces and two blocks as the next highest of the six total players to record four or more kills.
"It was great to be able to play everyone tonight and use many different line-ups," Rogers said. "That gives the players confidence going forward because this is a long season and we're going to need multiple people to step up at different times throughout to have the kind of success we want to have."
Libero
Amy Oldenburg led all players with 13 digs.
The Pumas showed a strong block early on the way to a holding a two-point lead, 8-6, through the first 14 points of the opening set until the Greyhounds got going. UIndy used a 10-3 run to start pulling away to a five-point lead, 16-11, after an error by Anna Sacco. UIndy continued to pull away and closed the set on a 6-0 run with a kill by Kerrigan on set point.
Saint Joseph's started the second set with the first two points, but UIndy scored eight of the next 10 to take control, 8-4, and force an early Puma timeout. The Greyhounds didn't have any large runs, but continually scored two or three points at a time to pull away for the win, 25-14, after back-to-back kills by freshman
Payton Schultz and Kerrigan.
UIndy had the fast start in the third set by scoring the first three points and pulling away for a six-point lead, 12-6, after Binkerd's only kill of the match. The Greyhounds were able to use a lot of players in the third set and the Pumas were able to hang around and tie the score at 22. Kerrigan wouldn't let the Pumas take the lead with a kill and Kim Trojan followed with UIndy's sixth ace for set point, 24-22. SJC saved one, but then
Hannah Bauer connected on the right side on the next to end the match, 25-23.
The Pumas were led by Sacco and Hannah Bedan with six kills each, while Alyssa Guarnaccia tallied 11 digs. Leah Zehme had 15 assists for SJC.
The Greyhounds head on the road to continue conference play this weekend at McKendree on Friday and Bellarmine on Saturday.
