LEBANON, Ill.- Five goals in the second half gave UIndy men's soccer the W in GLVC action at McKendree Friday night.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes,
Reid Strain found the back of the net with his seventh goal of the season just past the 49-minute mark. The Greyhound freshman, who leads the GLVC in goals scored, took a through ball from
Paul Scheipeter and rolled the ball into the corner of the frame.
Just more than 10 minutes later, UIndy (3-5-0; 2-3-0 GLVC) went up 2-0 on
Ryan Barnett's first goal of 2012. The senior took a corner kick from
Brett Greubel for the score. Less than two minutes later,
Matt Franco also got in the scoring column for the first time this season, with Scheipeter again on the assist, to put the Greyhounds up 3-0.
UIndy would tack on a pair of goals in the final three minutes of the contest, with
Devin Rice scoring in the 88th minute and
Tony Franco putting away the final Greyhound score in the 90th minute to push the score to 5-0.
Jason Krummen assisted on the match's final score.
Andrew Verhonik recorded the clean sheet in goal, his third of the season. The Plainfield, Ind. native made two saves on the night, as UIndy out-shot the Bearcats (4-3-0; 2-3-0 GLVC) 18-5. Strain's five shots led the Greyhounds, while
Kevin Eggert took three shots.
The Greyhounds head to Bellarmine for Sunday GLVC play. The match with the Knights will kick at 2:30 p.m.
NOTES: UIndy men's soccer welcomed a new member to its squad Wednesday afternoon, with Coach John Higgins and his wife Amber welcoming their first child, Emily Ann.
