Kristina Kerrigan had 17 kills attacking .417, in addition to a career-high seven blocks and seven digs as No. 9 UIndy volleyball defeated Bellarmine, 3-0 (25-18, 27-25, 25-16), at Knights Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Meghan Binkerd finished with 36 assists for the Greyhounds (11-2, 5-0 GLVC) as UIndy hit .330 as a team. Sophomore
Julia Watkins hit a career-high .800 with eight kills in 10 attempts, while fellow middle blocker
Brittany Anglemyer hit .389 with eight kills. Senior
Amy Oldenburg led the back row with 15 digs against the Knights (6-3, 3-2 GLVC).
Paula Byrns and Alyson Harmeling had 16 and 15 kills apiece for BU.
BU led early in the first set, 9-7, until the Greyhounds turned things around with a 5-1 run to lead by two, 12-10, after an Anglemyer kill. UIndy continued to pull away and held a four-point lead, 21-17, after another Anglemyer kill. Bellarmine scored two in a row on UIndy errors that cause head coach
Jody Rogers to call timeout. The stoppage worked with kills by
Hailey Brown and Kerrigan and a block on set point from Kerrigan and Anglemyer, 25-19.
UIndy was in control early, 9-6, until Bellarmine came back to take the lead in the second set, 14-13. Anglemyer came back with a kill and then back-to-back aces by
Shelby Holland put UIndy in front, 16-14. The Knights wouldn't fold and actually came back to earn set point, 24-23, but then missed the next serve. UIndy couldn't take advantage by following with another service miss for a second BU set point, 25-24. The Knights couldn't capitalize with three consecutive attack errors to let the Greyhounds steal the set, 27-25.
UIndy led by just two, 10-8, in the third set when another missed serve by Bellarmine started a big UIndy run. The missed serve started a 12-1 run that put the Hounds up 22-9 after four points in a row by Kerrigan on back-to-back kills and then back-to-back blocks with Watkins. The ninth and final service error of the match by Bellarmine ended the contest for UIndy, 25-16.
The Greyhounds remain on the road Tuesday at 6 p.m. for a non-conference match at NAIA power Taylor.
