DAYTON, Ohio – The UIndy women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 season with an exhibition on the road against the University of Dayton, falling
84-58.
The Flyers enter the season ranked 16th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, and 14th in the AP Top 25 Media Poll for Division I, and provided a stiff test for the visiting Hounds.
The Greyhounds opened the scoring, as
Kelly Walter drained a three-pointer within a minute of the opening tip. Dayton then went on a 19-0 run, as UIndy struggled to find an offensive rhythm early. The Greyhounds trailed 21-6 at the second media timeout.
UIndy was able to turn the tide from that point, however, leading Dayton 22-18 the final eleven-plus minutes of the half. The Greyhounds put the Flyers into early foul trouble, forcing 17 Dayton fouls and ÂÂÂÂshooting 20 free throws in the first half alone. The Hounds only made eight of the attempts, and also shot just 31 percent from the floor, and 18 percent from three-point land. The Hounds trailed 39-28 heading to the locker room.
The second half belonged to Dayton, as the Flyers shot over 48 percent en route to the victory. After a narrow 27-24 rebounding edge in the first half, Dayton controlled the boards 28-13 over UIndy in the second period. The size advantage also showed up for Dayton on the scoreboard, as the Flyers tallied 46 points in the paint to UIndy's 24.
Senior
Katy McIntosh led the Greyhounds with 16 points, also adding eight rebounds. Fellow Senior
Dajana Jovanovic chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds. Walter and sophomore transfer
Princess German each finished with 10 points.
UIndy is on the road at Indiana State Saturday for the second of three exhibition games this weekend.
