LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UIndy volleyball team defeated Bellarmine
3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23) to wrap up the regular season.
The Hounds (21-9, 15-3 GLVC) have won six matches in a row, and sit tied for second-best record in the GLVC with Southern Indiana and Rockhurst. Lewis finished the season atop the conference with a 16-2 mark.
Seniors
Brittany Anglemyer and
Kenzie Bruggeman each finished with 13 kills to lead the Greyhounds in the closely contested match.
After dropping the opening set, 25-23, UIndy bounced back to win by narrow margins in the next three. The match featured 33 ties and 17 lead changes, and the margin was never more than three points in either team's favorduring sets two and four. While the Hounds hit just .183 for the match, the Knights (15-13, 9-9) only hit .099.
"We didn't play nearly as well and really struggled getting into a rhythm," said Coach
Jason Reed. "We finished each set with some strong plays and overcame adversity."
Setter
Meghan Binkerd dished 51 assists and recorded 10 digs. Freshman
Becca Lira hit .368 with eight kills and a block assist.
Julia Watkins finished with seven kills.
Arielle Knafel led the Hounds with 23 digs, while
Kimberly Trojan had 20. Bruggeman totaled 15 digs, good for her 15th double-double of the season.
"We're confident moving forward with our ability to find success in multiple ways against different styles of volleyball," said Reed, about the upcoming GLVC Tournament.
The tournament begins next Friday, and will likely be hosted by Lewis. Last season, UIndy fell to Rockhurst 3-1 in the semifinals of the tournament.
