RENSSELAER, Ind. – In the week's marquee Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up, the No. 18 UIndy football team (8-1, 5-0) handed host Saint Joseph's a 27-24 defeat Saturday afternoon.  The Pumas (6-3, 3-2) entered the day just one game back of the first-place Greyhounds in the league standings, but  UIndy's 3rd-down success rate (8-for-16) and lack of turnovers proved too much for the Pumas to overcome.

Senior Klay Fiechter delivered 144 rushing yards and a touchdown to lead the Hounds offensively.  His 30-yard rushing TD in the first quarter gave him 43 for his career, tying the 58-year-old school record set by UIndy Hall of Famer Dick Nyers (1952-55).  The Bluffton, Ind., native ended the day just four yards short of becoming the school's all-time leading rusher.

Though they never led in the game, the Pumas tied it at 17-17 early in the fourth quarter, punctuating a methodical 12-play, 74-yard march with a three-yard touchdown from junior Braxton Shelton.

UIndy responded with 10 unanswered points, starting with a long TD catch from Kevin Teglia.  The drive saw the Greyhounds convert a 3rd & 9 with a 25-yard reception by Reece Horn, followed by Teglia's 26-yard touchdown on 2nd & 20.

On the ensuing SJC possession, a Koby Orris interception and 23-yard return set up Scott Miller's season-long 42-yard field goal.

Just 1:49 later, the Pumas struck back with a quick seven points to pull within three, but the Hounds controlled the ball for the final six minutes to bleed the clock dry and seal the win.

Senior Todd hacker paced the Hounds with eight total tackles; Derrick Bryant, Vince Maida and Tommy Taylor each added a sack; and junior John Strickland corralled a first-quarter interception.

Meanwhile, sophomore QB Connor Barthel finished 19 of 28 passing for 246 yards and two touchdowns.  Horn finished with nine catches for 90 yards, while fellow-receiver Logan Young notched a 19-yard touchdown catch.

The Greyhounds finish the regular season with two straight home games, starting with a match-up with the Quincy Hawks Saturday, Nov. 9.  Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Notes: UIndy is a perfect 13-0 in GLVC games since the conference started football in 2012 …The Greyhounds, who came into the game leading the nation in scoring defense (10.9 ppg), allowed more points than their previous four games combined ... UIndy was 5-for-7 on 3rd-down attempts in the fourth quarter.
