INDIANAPOLIS – Two individual career-highs and a first-half run fueled a
102-72 win over GLIAC opponent Wayne State (Mich.) Saturday in Nicoson Hall.
Katy McIntosh finished with 28 points, and
Eliza Wortman scored 19, both career highs for the UIndy seniors. McIntosh's 16-of-17 performance at the charity stripe is also a career high, and fell one shy of the program record for made free throws.
What started as a contested regional battle turned into a one-sided affair near the end of the first half.
With just over six minutes left in the half, the Warriors (1-1) led 27-26. The Greyhounds (5-2) then reeled off a 25-6 run to close the period. In that span, UIndy hit five three-pointers (three from
Kelly Walter, and two from
Shelby Wall), and shot 10-of-11 from the floor. When the clock hit zeroes, UIndy led 51-33.
The spark also came in large part due to a scrappy Greyhound defense, which had six steals in the half. Wayne State finished with four assists to 12 turnovers, while UIndy had 12 assists to one turnover.
It was much of the same in the second half, as UIndy shot 53 percent from the floor, while holding Wayne State to just 40 percent.
Seven Greyhounds combined to hit 11-of-22 three-pointers in the rout, led by Walter's and Wall's three each. UIndy hit 34 of 63 (54 percent) field goals, and 23 of 37 (85 percent) free throw attempts.
Princess German chipped in 10 points, while Walter and Wall finished with 11 each.
Dajana Jovanovic added nine points on 4-of-5 shooting. Wortman led UIndy with nine rebounds and four blocks, and
Kirsten Gliesmann grabbed eight boards. The Greyhounds scored 26 points off of 16 Warrior turnovers, and held a 54-22 advantage in bench points.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Shareta Brown, who finished with 23 points. Imari Redfield and Des Lavita-Stephens each added 11.
UIndy is in action Dec. 7, hosting Cedarville in Nicoson Hall at 1:00 p.m.
