ALLENDALE, Mich. – The season ended for UIndy volleyball Friday night in a 3-2 loss to No. 23 Ferris State in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.
Recent NCAA Regional tournament history provided the backdrop for the match. UIndy ended Ferris State's season in the semifinals each of the last two seasons, but the third time proved a charm for the Bulldogs (24-8, 15-3 GLIAC).
The teams also met once this season, with UIndy winning in straight sets at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament (25-21, 25-18, 31-29).
The first set started in back-and-forth fashion, as the teams fought to gain control early. A short 6-2 run from UIndy (25-10, 15-3 GLVC) opened the margin enough for the Hounds to maintain the lead. The Bulldogs pulled within one, at 22-21, but the Greyhounds answered out of a timeout to score the final four points. Although the Greyhounds hit just .118, the Bulldogs only managed a .028 clip as UIndy racked up 18 digs and four total blocks.
After the Hounds opened the second set up 3-0, the Bulldogs reeled off a 9-1 run to claim momentum. Ferris State did not relinquish the lead, hitting .303 compared to .050 for UIndy and winning the set, 25-16.
The Bulldogs were able to carry that over to the third, as they stormed out to a 14-6 advantage. Continuing to hit at a high .333 clip, Ferris State took the set, 25-15. The Greyhounds again couldn't find its offensive stride, committing nine attack errors and hitting just .081.
It appeared FSU would continue its roll into the fourth, as it built an 8-3 lead. The Greyhounds fought back to tie the match, 15-15, before taking a 16-15 lead, its first since a 4-3 edge early in the second set. UIndy rallied to score 10 of the final 13 points, taking the set, 25-18.
Brittany Anglemyer recorded six kills in the frame, hitting .363 (6k-2e-11ta).
Ferris came out in the fifth set on fire, taking an early 6-1 lead. UIndy clawed back to bring it to 11-10, but ultimately fell, 15-10.
"It was a hard fought match for both sides," said Coach
Jason Reed "I feel like we truly left it all out on the floor, and I thought Ferris had to play exceptionally well to beat us."
Hitting an even .100, the Greyhounds turned in their worst hitting performance since their loss at Missouri S&T Sep. 21 (.031). Ferris State finished with 16.5 blocks, stopping many of UIndy's attacks at the net.
"Over the course of five sets they were in system more than we were, and they blocked really well," noted Reed. "As a whole, it was really tough to get going because they were touching everything."
Anglemyer and
Hailey Brown each led the Hounds with 14 kills, and
Julia Watkins finished with nine.
Meghan Binkerd totaled 41 assists and 18 digs.
Kimberly Trojan recorded 26 digs, tied for her second most this season. Bruggeman, Brown and
Arielle Knafel also finished with double-figure digs.
It was the seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament trip for the Greyhounds, and they've reached the semifinal match each time.
"I certainly don't have any regrets with anything we did," Reed said of the Greyhounds' game plan and effort. "I'm proud of how we fought back in the fourth set especially. Ferris just had a little bit more than us, and they deserve to move forward."
UIndy closes its season with a 25-10 overall record, marking the 10th 25-win season in program history. Along the way, the Greyhounds collected their fourth GLVC Championship.
