EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The #10 UIndy baseball team (6-1) surrendered its first loss of the 2013 season, and rebounded with a win in its second game of the day Sunday at USI's Dunn Hospitality Classic.
GAME ONE - Drury 6, #10 UIndy 5
Five combined runs in the eighth and ninth innings from Drury (5-3) led to the Greyhounds' first loss of the season.
UIndy was the first to score in the non-league matchup, putting up a single run in the bottom of the third inning.
Brady Thomas opened the frame with a single and would later come in to score, putting the Greyhounds ahead 1-0.
After the Panthers knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of four, UIndy added another solo tally in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead, 2-1.
Nick Whitty represented the run, reaching on a one-out single to right an later scoring after the Drury firstbaseman made on error on a ball put in play by Thomas.
The Greyhounds added two more runs in the fifth and another single run in the sixth to stake themselves to a 5-1 lead.
Tyler O'Daniel and
Caleb Hallman both came up with RBI singles in the fifth, while
Ryan Wides provided an RBI double to plate UIndy's sixth-inning run.
Hugo Lalonde threw seven innings in the contest, surrendering just the fourth-inning Panther run while scattering five hits in the outing. He made way for
Gavin Petrea in the top of the eighth, with Petrea giving up the inning's three innings to push the score to 5-4.
The Panthers added two more runs on a walk, a hit and a Greyhound error in the top of the ninth to take the 6-5 win.
Evan Eyer (0-1) was tagged with the loss for UIndy, as the junior transfer was responsible for both runners who scored in the game's final frame.
Wides went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI to lead the Greyhound offense, while both Hallman and Thomas each added a pair of hits.
GAME TWO - #10 UIndy 4, Augustana 2
The Vikings (8-6) opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning, on three hits, to take an early 1-0 lead. UIndy answered quickly, pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A
Scott Lawley double to left center with one out started the offense, with
Jake Hartley following Lawley onbase by drawing a walk. A double down the leftfield line from O'Daniel a batter later brought home both runs.
The Greyhounds pushed their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second, with
Keegan Remsburg scoring on a balk by the Auggie pitcher. The Vikings would hang one more run in the top of the sixth, with UIndy adding a final run in the bottom of eight to take the 4-2 victory.
Phil Wheeler (1-0) went the distance in his first start of the year. The senior struck out 10 and walked two while giving up both Viking runs earned. Thomas was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, completing a five-hit day.
UIndy closes out the Dunn Hospitility Classic Monday, again facing off with Augustana. The teams will play a doubleheader, with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. EST from the USI Baseball Field.
