EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The #7 UIndy baseball team closed out its action in the Dunn Hospitality Classic with doubleheader split versus Augustana.
UIndy took game one in convincing fashion, by a 12-4 score, before dropping game two to the Vikings 7-4. Both games were played seven innings.
GAME ONE: UIndy 12 - Augustana 4
The Greyhounds scored early and often as the visiting team on the scoreboard in game one, plating eight runs in just the first three innings.
A triple off the bat of
Jake Hartley brought home the first run, in the form of
Scott Lawley, who reached via a hit by pitch a batter earlier.
Tyler O'Daniel followed with a single to thirdbase to score Hartley.
In the four-run second,
Mitch Ransburg opened the frame with a triple down the rightfield line. He was then sacrificed home by a
Brady Thomas ball to rightfield. After doubling to left center,
Jake Weinzapfel came home on a ball misplayed at shortstop off the bat of Lawley. Hartley added the final two runs on a homerun to centerfield a batter later.
Caleb Hallman and Ransburg both came home in the third, and after a scoreless fourth inning, the Greyhounds put up three more runs in the top of the fifth. A Hartley double down the left field line drove in the first run of the inning, with a towering
Nick Whitty homerun to left field bringing in the additional pair.
The Vikings notched all four of their runs in the bottom half of the fifth, on three hits. UIndy would tally its final run in the top of seven, with Lawley crossing the plate.
Hartley's 4-for-4 effort, in hitting for the cycle, led the Greyhound offense which collected eight extra-base hits on the game. Hartley also had five RBI in the contest.
UIndy newcomer
Matt Pate (1-0) earned his first pitching victory in a Greyhound uniform with the W. Pate tossed five innings, striking out three while giving up five hits to the Vikings before giving way to
Aaron Gregory who faced the minimum six batters in closing out the win.
GAME TWO: Augustana 7 - UIndy 4
It was the Vikings who would strike first in game two, with Augustana jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Greyhounds answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, with
Dan Eliopulos and Lawley providing RBI singles to score Ransburg and
Bryce Feller. The Vikings would, however, regain the lead in the top of four, plating four runs on four hits. Augie would add another single run in the top of five to push the score to 7-2.
UIndy was able to cut the Augustana lead to three with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but could not complete the comeback.
Greyhound starter
Brett Collins was tabbed with the loss, in his first appearance of the young season. Collins surrendered six of the Viking runs in three innings of work before
Sean Elliott and
Clint Seefeldt took over the ballgame.
UIndy returns to Indianapolis to host Kentucky State in a Wednesday afternoon contest. First pitch from Greyhound Park is slated for noon.
