EVANSVILLE, Ind.- No. 10 UIndy won its fifth straight ballgame and remained undefeated on the young season with a 5-1 victory over Drury to open USI's Dunn Hospitality Classic Friday.
Drury, the home team on the scoreboard for the non-league game, struck first, hanging a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The Greyhounds (5-0) answered back in the top of the second, however, matching the Panthers' single run.
Tyler O'Daniel tallied the first UIndy run, scoring after leading off the frame with a double down the leftfield line. After he moved to third on a passed ball, the Greyhound thirdbaseman came home on a single up the middle from
Caleb Hallman.
UIndy would take the lead in the third, plating two runs on three hits. The Greyhounds loaded the bases with no one out on back-to-back singles followed by a walk. An O'Daniel doubleplay ball scored
Ryan Wides for the first run, with
Nick Whitty driving in
Scott Lawley a batter later to push the score to 3-0 UIndy.
A two-run seventh inning pushed the final score to 5-1, with O'Daniel and
Jake Hartley scoring the pair. O'Daniel sent a double to left center, then made it to third on a throw and scored via a fielding error at thirdbase. Hartley came home ahead of all the fireworks, scoring on the play after reaching on a walk.
O'Daniel, Whitty and Hallman all had a pair of hits for the Greyhound offense, with O'Daniel scoring two runs on the day.
Josh Witt (3-0) picked up the complete-game victory, surrendering just one run over nine innings. The junior scattered six hits and struck out two en route to the victory.
The Greyhounds continue on in the Dunn Hospitality Classic Sunday, with another non-conference game with Drury.
