Volleyball splits first day at UW-Parkside Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Somers, Wis. – The UIndy volleyball team split its first day at the UW-Parkside Tournament, moving to 2-4 on the young season.

The No. 19 Greyhounds opened the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Upper Iowa (27-25, 22-25, 21-25, 28-26, 15-10). After swinging the momentum in their favor near the end of the fourth set, UIndy used a 14-5 run in the final set to take the match.

"It was a really good team victory. We fought together to be successful," said coach Jason Reed. "That carried into the second match. Playing together and getting contributions from different people is going to make us successful through the year."

In the second match, the Greyhounds fell to second-ranked Minnesota Duluth, 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-23). In a back-and-forth match, UIndy found itself on the wrong end of two close sets.

UIndy hit over .300 in three of the sets, and were led by Hailey Brown's 17 kills on 39 swings.

"She was unstoppable," Reed said of Brown. "We called upon her a lot to get kills in key situations and she did. She's emerging as a leader for us both on the court and off the court."

Reed was also impressed with the play from the middle and right side of the offense. Brittany Anglemyer, Julia Watkins and Becca Lira combined for 27 kills.

Alyssa Garret and Kenzie Bruggeman led the Greyhounds with 11 digs each.

The Hounds finish the tournament Saturday against Wayne State, Mich. (3-2) and Gannon (3-1).
