Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Over 200 fans packed into the Ruth Lilly Center for the UIndy volleyball home opener. With the energetic crowd behind every point, the Greyhounds defeated GLVC opponent Rockhurst, 3-2 (25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 20-25).
Through the first two sets, senior
Kenzie Bruggeman ignited the Greyhound offense with 13 kills, hitting .427 to help UIndy climb ahead, 2-0.
After gaining the 2-0 match advantage, UIndy (6-5, 2-1 GLVC) lost momentum to the Hawks (8-3, 1-2 GLVC), who forced a decisive fifth set after close third and fourth sets.
In the final set, UIndy found a steady attack from
Brittany Anglemyer and
Becca Lira, who each had three kills. The Greyhounds opened with an 8-3 run, never relinquishing the lead to finish the set. Each point closer to victory brought more fans to their feet, as UIndy worked toward to finish off the Hawks in the home opener. Setter
Meghan Binkerd assisted on nine of the Hounds' 15 points.
The fifth set capped off a remarkable night for Binkerd, who finished with a career-high 70 assists. That mark sets the record for assists by a Greyhound in a five-set match since 1999, when single match records became available. Her distribution aided a balanced Greyhounds attack, as Bruggeman (23),
Hailey Brown (17), Lira (14), Anglemyer (13) and
Julia Watkins (10) all finished with double-digit kills.
The Hounds were equally balanced on defense, as Brown (20), Binkerd (13), Bruggeman (13),
Kimberly Trojan (13) and
Alyssa Garrett (13) contributed double-digit digs. Lira also supported the Greyhounds defense with eight block assists and one solo block.
UIndy continues the home stand Sunday against William Jewell at 1:00 PM.
