Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – Princess German scored a career-high 19 points and four other Greyhounds reached double figures in an
89-73 victory over William Jewell Saturday in Nicoson Hall.
What started as an offensive shootout turned into another large win for the 16th-ranked Greyhounds (13-2, 4-0 GLVC), who have now won nine in a row by an average margin of 22 points.
Both teams started out hot from the floor, as each offense found ways to take advantage of the opposing defense.
William Jewell (8-5, 3-2) came out in full-court pressure, but the up-tempo Greyhounds were able to handle it, and even turned in a 9-0 advantage in fast break points. UIndy shot a remarkable 71 percent (17-for-24) from the floor in the opening frame, hitting six three-pointers.
Senior
Katy McIntosh and redshirt-junior Kirsten provided the immediate offense for UIndy, combining for 20 of the Hounds' first 22 points.
On the other end of the court, the Cardinals were able to exploit the Hounds' 2-3 zone in the first half by playing an in-and-out game. WJ stretched the zone by connecting on six threes, and found the soft part of the defense by hitting several 15-foot jumpers near the free throw line. The Cardinals finished the half shooting 52 percent (15-for-29), matching the Greyhounds' 6-for-9 mark from long range.
Down by 12 midway through the half, William Jewell hit three from behind the arc in a short span to tie the game, 33-33. UIndy was able to regain the lead, but the teams went into the locker rooms separated by just four points, favoring the Hounds, 46-42.
The second half wasn't nearly as close, as UIndy started on an 18-4 run, sparked by seven points from German.
The Gary, Ind., native, playing in her first season as a Greyhound, finished 6-of-11 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. German, a redshirt-sophomore, transferred to UIndy from Milwaukee-Wisconsin.
The Greyhounds shut down the Cardinals' offense in the second half, holding WJ to just 9-of-27 shooting (33 percent) and 2-of-11 (18 percent) from long range.
UIndy keyed on the Cardinals' shooter near the free throw line, not allowing the Cardinals to work as much inside the 2-3 zone. William Jewell hit just one mid-range jumper in the half.
Senior
Rose Savela gave Coach
Constantin Popa 14 efficient minutes, scoring a season-high 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting. She connected on all three of her three-point attempts, and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
McIntosh (14 points), Gliesmann (14) and
Erin Murphy (13) were the other Greyhounds in double figures. McIntosh and Murphy each chipped in six assists and four rebounds. Gliesmann finished with five boards and three blocks, and senior
Dajana Jovanovic grabbed a season-high seven boards.
UIndy out-rebounded William Jewell 38-16, leading to a 17-9 second-chance points advantage. The Greyhounds finished with a season-high 64 percent field goal percentage, hitting exactly 50 percent (10-of-20) from three-point land.
The Cardinals were able to score 28 points off of 17 Greyhound turnovers, and finished the game 24-for-56 (43 percent) from the floor. The Cardinals were led in scoring by Maddie Nelson, who totaled 14 points. Chelsea Meeks, who came into the game fifth in the GLVC in scoring, finished with just eight points.
The Greyhounds hit the road next week to take on GLVC-East foes Bellarmine and Southern Indiana.
