LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Katy McIntosh and
Kirsten Gliesmann set career-highs as the 14th-ranked Greyhounds defeated Bellarmine 86-72 in Knights Hall Thursday night, winning their tenth game in a row.
McIntosh, a 5-9 guard out of Austin, Ind., dropped 29 points behind a stellar 15-for-17 performance from the free throw line. She broke her previous career high of 28, which she set Nov. 30 against Wayne State University. The senior now sits second all-time in program history with 501 career free throws and eighth with 1,428 points.
Gliesmann, the 6-2 UIndy forward, scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, sinking all five of her free throw attempts. The Greenwood, Ind., native left the game early after picking up her second foul less than five minutes into the contest, but came back to top her previous career high 15 points. She hit that mark twice, including last season's game at Bellarmine. Gliesmann also grabbed 10 rebounds, marking the second double-double for UIndy this season.
UIndy (14-2, 5-0 GLVC) won its tenth game in a row and the sixth by double-digits. The Knights (6-7, 2-3) were coming off their best shooting game of the year in a 20-point win over Missouri S&T, but were held to 41 percent shooting (25-for-61), connecting on just four of 20 three-point attempts.
The first half saw each team hit a brief cold spell. Bellarmine was unable to sink a field goal for a six-minute stretch from the 18:22 mark to 12:08, and the Greyhounds hit a five minute skid around the 9-minute mark where they went 0-7 from the floor.
Despite the short offensive lapse, UIndy shot an even 50 percent (15-of-30) and went to the break with a double-figure lead, 42-32.
At the 14:18 mark in the second half, Bellarmine clawed back to pull the game within two, 49-47, the closest margin since the Hounds took an early 11-8 lead.
Two free throws by Gliesmann and layup from McIntosh pushed UIndy's lead back up to 53-47, and the Hounds were able to fend off the Knights down the stretch.
With 2:53 remaining, McIntosh sank her 15th free throw to reach 29 points, and gave the Hounds their biggest lead at 82-66. She also dished nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds.
Shelby Wall and
Eliza Wortman tallied eight points each, and
Kelly Walter finished with seven.
Princess German and
Carly Lythjohan totaled six points.
The Greyhounds shot 52 percent, hitting the mark for the ninth time this season and improving their GLVC-best field goal percentage.
Bellarmine's Sarah Galvin finished with 30 points, her career high, and hit 10-of-12 free throws.
UIndy takes on Southern Indiana Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Evansville, Ind.
