LEBANON, Ill. – Five Greyhounds reached double figures in UIndy's sharp-shooting 102-72 road win over McKendree Saturday afternoon.
Katy McIntosh (17 points),
Kelly Walter (16),
Eliza Wortman (16),
Princess German (13) and
Kirsten Gliesmann (12) led the Hounds' high-powered offense, which reached 100 points for the second time this season.
The 18th-ranked Greyhounds (17-3, 8-1 GLVC) entered the game with the GLVC's best field goal percentage, and only increased that mark with a 36-for-59 output (61 percent).
Coach
Constantin Popa's squad mimicked Thursday night's plan, working through the low post to convert easy buckets. The early work down low opened up the Greyhound shooters on the perimeter. Five Hounds hit at least two from long range, and the team finished 13-of-21 (62 percent) from three-point land.
The 13 triples matched a season high, and the percentage was the highest for the Greyhounds since going 9-of-14 (64 percent) in a win over Michigan Tech Nov. 19, 2011.
"We get those high percentage shots on the inside and then they start falling from the outside," said Popa, whose team won their fifth game this season by at least 30 points.
McKendree (7-9, 2-6) hung around with UIndy during the first 10 minutes of the game, trailing just 20-18 midway through the opening half.
The Hounds were able to close the half strong, however, finishing on a 20-12 run to take a 47-38 halftime lead. UIndy shot over 55 percent from the floor, and were able to get in the bonus early on, hitting 13 of 14 first-half free throws.
If the game was in reach at the break, the Greyhounds made sure it wouldn't stay that way much longer. Opening the second half on a quick 7-0 run, the Hounds had the lead up to 65-44 by the first media timeout. UIndy held the Bearcats scoreless from the media break until the 11-minute mark, building the lead up to 74-44.
From there, the rout was officially in progress. The Greyhounds shot even better in the second frame, connecting on 21 of 33 shots (64 percent), hitting nine three-pointers. UIndy's biggest lead came with five minutes left in the game, when
Rose Savela laid in a bucket to make it 97-55.
Walter led UIndy's potent long-range assault, scorching the Bearcats on 4-for-5 shooting from behind the arc. Wortman also scored 16 off the bench, missing just one shot while grabbing two rebounds and two blocks.
McIntosh finished the game hitting 6-of-7, sinking both three-point attempts. She also added three rebounds, two assists and two steals to go along with her team-high 17 points. German also hit her two three-point attempts, and converted 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Along with her 12 points, Gliesmann grabbed seven boards and blocks three shots.
Making her first start of the season, Savela recorded a career-high-tying eight rebounds for the second game in a row, also dishing a career-high five assists.
Shelby Wall, the conference's leading three-point shooter, hit 3-of-4 from long range. Fellow senior
Megan Birchmeier connected on two of her five attempts from behind the arc.
UIndy out-rebounded McKendree 37-26, and finished 17-of-20 as a team from the free throw line.
"We've got to stay humble," said Popa, looking ahead to next Thursday's game against 23rd-ranked Lewis. "We've got something going here, so we just need to keep our goals in mind going forward and take it one game at a time."
The Hounds host the Flyers in Nicoson Hall Thursday, with tip set for 5:30 p.m.

Notes: McIntosh moved up to seventh all-time in program history with 1,479 career points. Wortman jumped to second all-time with 126 career blocks. Gliesmann's three blocks moved her to seventh on the same list with 86 career blocks.
