ROLLA, Mo. – UIndy brought the GLVC's best shooting offense into conference play Friday night and continued its hot-handed attack in an
81-57 victory over Missouri S&T (4-6, 0-2 GLVC) in Rolla, Mo.
The Greyhounds (10-2, 1-0) shot 48 percent from the floor, after entering Friday hitting 49 percent. Four Hounds finished in double figures, led by
Shelby Wall's and
Eliza Wortman's 14 points off the bench. The two would help UIndy to a 46-11 edge in bench scoring.
Wall and Wortman combined to shoot 11-for-13 from the floor, including 6-for-7 from behind the arc. Wortman, a 6-1 senior from Germantown, Wis., recorded the first UIndy double-double of the season by grabbing 11 boards to go along with her scoring.
UIndy would use two separate runs to build its 15-point half time lead. Up four, the Greyhounds capped an 11-3 spurt with a
Rose Savela three-pointer to take control, 23-11. After the Miners cut it to within seven at 30-23, UIndy closed the half on a 10-2 tear to head into the locker rooms up 40-25.
The Crimson and Grey connected on 16 of 33 first-half attempts (49 percent), compared to just 11 of the same amount for the Miners (33 percent).
S&T responded out of the break, knocking down two and three-point jumpers within the first minute, but it was merely a speed bump in the Hounds' runaway victory. Another run pushed the Greyhounds further from the Miners, and by the midway point in the second half UIndy held a 63-42 advantage.
While the Greyhound offense has been clicking, the defense has held its own, as well. UIndy kept the Miners to just 31 percent shooting from the floor, marking the fifth game in a row the Hounds held their opponents to under 40 percent.
Erin Murphy finished with 11 points, her most in a Greyhound uniform, and
Princess German added 10.
Katy McIntosh scored seven and fell one short of a new career-high with 11 rebounds. She also added five assists and three steals.
The Greyhounds are facing sixth-ranked Drury Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
