INDIANAPOLIS – With a top-20 match-up providing the backdrop, Nicoson Hall witnessed an instant classic Thursday night. It took three overtimes, but the visiting 20th-ranked Lewis Flyers topped the 16th-ranked Greyhounds, 111-105.
In a back-and-forth game between two of the GLVC's best teams, neither squad could separate itself from the other for much of the contest.
Behind nearly 50 percent second-half shooting, the Greyhounds (17-4, 8-2 GLVC) finally built a sizable 77-67 lead with five minutes left in the game.
The Flyers (15-3, 9-1) answered with three 3-pointers and a 12-2 run to finish the game, making it 79-79 at the end of regulation.
After squandering the double-digit lead late in the second half, the Greyhounds found themselves down more than once in the extra periods.
In the first extra session, Lewis held an 85-81 lead with less than two minutes remaining. With the shot clock expiring, and her team down by four, senior
Shelby Wall, the nation's third-best three-point shooter (48.8 percent), pulled up from the half-court logo and sank a three-pointer to make it 85-84. Lewis hit a free throw on the next possession, and
Katy McIntosh matched with two of her own to knot the game, 86-86.
With the ball on the final possession, Mariyah Brawner-Henley missed two close layups that would have sealed the win for the Flyers.
In the second overtime, UIndy lost an early lead, giving up seven points in a row to trail 95-91.
Kelly Walter pulled UIndy closer with two free throws, but with 9.8 seconds left in the period, Brawner-Henley connected on two clutch free throws of her own to make it a two possession game, 97-93.
That was when Walter made what was undoubtedly the play of the game.
There was little time for the Hounds to mount a comeback, and when a three-point attempt by Wall was blocked, the Greyhounds' chances of survival dwindled along with the clock.
McIntosh scooped up the blocked shot, and immediately hit a midrange jumper. With just 1.3 seconds left, down by two, Walter stole the Flyers' inbound pass, spun and flipped in a short jumper to tie the game as the buzzer sounded.
She was immediately swarmed by her Greyhound teammates as the Nicoson Hall crowd erupted.
The UIndy magic ran out in the third and final overtime, however, as Lewis was able to score six in a row to make it 106-100 with 40 second left. The Greyhounds couldn't pull out another spectacular comeback, falling 111-105.
Walter's career night came on 5-of-13 shooting from long range, and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. The junior guard added six rebounds, as well.
Five other Hounds finished in double figures, led by Wall (17 points), McIntosh (16),
Princess German (13),
Erin Murphy (13) and
Kirsten Gliesmann (10).
Wall went an even 50 percent (5-10) from three-point range, moving her to 10th all-time in school history with 111 career triples.
McIntosh added eight assists, three rebounds and two steals to go with her 16 points. Gliesmann recorded her second double-double of the year, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. She also had four blocks and three steals.
Murphy finished 5-for-7 from the floor, dishing seven assists.
Dajana Jovanovic scored six and got a season-high 10 rebounds.
UIndy held a 49-8 advantage in bench points, and a 22-6 edge in the fast break.
While the Lewis bench managed just eight points, each starter finished in double figures to negate the Hounds' production.

Jamie Johnson scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Flyers, hitting seven 3-pointers in the win.
Despite missing several chances to win the game at the end of regulation and the first overtime, Mariyah Brawner-Henley totaled her 17th double-double of the season, scoring 23 and grabbing a career-high 18 rebounds.

Kristin Itschner fell one shy of a career high with 22 points, adding eight rebounds and six assists. Jess Reinhart scored 16, grabbing 10 rebounds, and Nikki Nellen tallied 13 points.
