Dig Pink match ends in 3-1 UIndy victory

INDIANAPOLIS – The pink-clad Greyhound volleyball squad defeated visiting Cedarville 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 12-25, 25-18) Tuesday night in UIndy's annual Dig Pink Match.

Four Hounds finished with double-digit kills, including Becca Lira (12), Lynsey Hazelwood (11), Hailey Brown (10) and Arielle Knafel (10). The spread attack was facilitated by setter Meghan Binkerd who finished with 41 assists.

The Yellow Jackets (14-12, 6-1 G-MAC) managed just 8 kills in the opening set, hitting .028 (8-7-36) to UIndy's .225 (14-6-35). Binkerd set the tone early for the Greyhounds (12-8, 9-2 GLVC) with 12 assists, allowing five separate Hounds to register a kill.

Binkerd and the UIndy offense picked up the efficiency in the second set, as the team hit .389 (18-4-36) on the strength of the senior setter's 15 assists. Cedarville hit for a higher percentage in the second frame that it did in the opener, but ran into the UIndy front line that totaled 4 team blocks.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the third set, sprinting out to a 10-2 lead en route to the 25-12 win. UIndy hit just -.250 (3-10-28) during the game.

UIndy brushed off the lost set and ended its two-match skid with a win in the fourth game, 25-18. Six Hounds tallied multiple kills, and UIndy nearly doubled Cedarville in digs (18-10).

Kimberly Trojan led the Greyhounds defensively with 16 digs, extending her streak of double-digit digs to 20 matches. Knafel racked up 13 digs and Brown totaled 10, good for their third and seventh kill/dig double-doubles this season, respectively. Binkerd's 12 digs signaled her 13th assist/dig double-double of the year.

Both Trojan and Binkerd continued their climb up the UIndy annals for career digs. Trojan's 1,158 is good for 10th all-time, and Binkerd - UIndy's career leader in assists - is just ahead in ninth with 1,168 digs.

UIndy is back in action this weekend against a pair of GLVC West opponents. The Hounds face Missouri-St. Louis Saturday at 3 p.m. ET and Maryville Sunday at 1 p.m.
