game notesON TAPUIndy opens the 2014-15 campaign in Bloomington, Ind., to face the Hoosiers in an exhibition contest, the first of two scheduled this season.
KNOW YOUR ENEMYThe Indiana Hoosiers finished 21-13 overall last season, but just 5-11 in the Big Ten Conference. They were led by freshman sensation Larryn Brooks, who averaged 16.3 points, 4.5 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game, becoming the first freshman in Indiana history to score over 500 points in a single season.
A familiar face will be pacing the opposing sidelines. IU coach Teri Moren - hired August 9th - was the head coach at UIndy from 2000-2007. The 2003 WBCA Region 4 Coach of the Year in NCAA Division II, her Greyhound teams went to three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournaments and earned Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2002-03. That squad finished with a 29-3 record overall and an 18-2 mark in conference play, marking one of the most successful seasons in program history. Last season the Greyhounds faced Moren's Indiana State squad in an exhibition, falling 61-36.
UIndy and IU last met Nov. 8, 2011 for an exhibition match in Assembly Hall. The Greyhounds nearly knocked off their D-I counterparts, falling 50-47.
BACK TO THE BIG DANCELast year the Greyhounds made an NCAA Tournament appearance for the sixth time in seven seasons, and 11th overall.
The Greyhounds traveled to Springfield, Mo., as the three-seed in the Midwest Regional facing six-seed Wayne State. A late 16-4 run from the Warriors lifted them past the Greyhounds, 63-58.
UIndy sports a 5-11 record in 11 NCAA appearances. The team advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2009, good for its deepest-ever run.
YEAR IN REVIEWUIndy finished the 2013-14 season 23-9 overall and 15-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, marking the first 20-plus win season in the Popa Era and 11th in the program's three-plus decades.
The '13-14 team set program records for single-season points (2,488) and three-point field goals (248), and ranked in the top five in scoring (77.8 pts/gm), field goals (852), free throws (536), field goal pct. (.473), free throw pct. (.776) and blocks (161).
The Greyhounds ranked in the top 10 nationally in field goal percentage (3rd, 47.3%), free throw percentage (8th, 77.6%) and blocks per game (10th, 5.0), and was 23rd in scoring offense (77.8 pts) and 27th in three-point shooting (36.1%)
YOUNG PUPSThe Hounds lost eight players from the '13-14 squad due to graduation, meaning they will rely on several new faces in the upcoming campaign. Three transfers -
Nicole Anderson,
Mariah Weddle and
Marlena Muszak - join six freshmen -
Sarah Costello,
Devin Ferguson,
Tina Negoescu,
Emily Thomas,
Ashley Montanez and
Brooke Leins - to make up the wave of newcomers.
Anderson comes to UIndy from Division I Miami (OH) where she led the team with 5.7 rebounds per game and was third averaging 8.2 points.
Indianapolis is the third stop for Weddle, who spent one season at Concordia University-Wisconsin and another at Jefferson College (Mo.). She earned second team All-Conference at Jefferson after averaging 11 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
The 6-3 Muszak played one year at Casper College in Wyoming, averaging 4.7 minutes in 23 games for the Thunderbirds.
WELCOME BACKSeniors
Carly Lythjohan and
Kelly Walter, and junior
Princess German are the only Hounds returning that saw significant time in '13-14. Walter averaged 10.4 points per contest, leading the team with 70 three-point field goals. German was the only Greyhound to start all 32 games last season and finished with 10.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game. Lyhtjohan averaged 21.8 minutes in 28 games and 19 starts.
Junior
Kylie Ballard and
Emily Alfrey, and sophomore
Victoria Schaefer are the final three returners, but each played limited or no minutes last year due to injury.
POPA PROFILEConstantin Popa (pronounced CON-stan-teen POH-puh) has taken the Greyhounds to three NCAA Tournaments in as many years as head coach. Last year he became the fifth coach in program history to reach the 60-win mark. He's just the second coach to record 60 wins in the first three seasons at the helm (LeAnn Freeland, 2007-2010).
LET ME CHECK MY SCHEDULEUIndy released its 2014-15 schedule August 28th, with highlights including five contests against out-of-conference regional foes and a trip to Winter Park, Fla., for the Rollins Invitational.
The first regular season game is in Detroit Nov. 14 against Wayne State, the squad that bounced UIndy from the NCAA Midwest Regional last year. UIndy then faces three more Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents in Grand Valley (away, Nov. 22), Northwood (home, Nov. 25) and Ohio Dominican (home, Nov. 29).
Before diving into the GLVC slate the Crimson and Grey head south for the Rollins Invitational in Winter Park, Fla. The four-team, two-day tournament features three 2013-14 NCAA teams. The Greyhounds first face Tarleton State, the 3-seed in the last season's South Central region, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. Host school and the 3-seed from the South region last year, Rollins College, will play Concord University (W.V.) in the other Dec. 15 match-up. The losers of the two games will meet Dec. 16 at 4 p.m., with the winners battling at 6 p.m.
