INDIANAPOLIS – After honoring its seven seniors before the game, the 23rd-ranked UIndy women's basketball team (21-7, 11-5 GLVC) recorded an
85-70 win against visiting Bellarmine Saturday night. Three Greyhound seniors finished in double figures, but it was junior
Kelly Walter that amassed a game-high 20 points.
The first half was a narrow contest with neither team able to get more than a six point advantage. After building a 16-10 lead following a Walter three-pointer, UIndy allowed a 13-3 run to surrender the lead to the Knights (13-12, 9-8). The Greyhounds then grabbed momentum and the lead when
Princess German banked in a three-pointer to spark a short 7-0 run.
There were seven ties and six lead changes in the first half alone.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the opening frame, but each team also committed over 12 fouls, resulting in 31 combined free throws. UIndy sank 13 compared to Bellarmine's 10, and led by the same margin at the break, 41-38.
While both teams continued to rack up fouls and free throws, UIndy's defense held Bellarmine to under 20 percent from the field (7-36), and just 1-of-12 from three-point range in the second half. The Greyhounds finished the half 13-of-28 (.464) and a near-perfect 14-16 from the charity stripe.
The Hounds' greatest lead came when senior
Erin Murphy sent in a layup to make it 73-55 with just over seven minutes to go.
UIndy finished with 27 free throws, tied for second most in a game this season, sinking over 81 percent (27-33). The Knights matched the Hounds' effort with 27 freebies, but connected on 67 percent (27-40).
Walter notched a season-high-tying five threes en route to her 20-point performance, leading all scorers. Senior
Eliza Wortman totaled 15 points, five boards and two blocks, and German finished with 13 points and five assists.
Murphy finished her Senior Night with 13 points and six dimes, as well as four rebounds, a block and a steal. Fellow senior
