RENSSELAER, Ind. – A three-point onslaught led by junior
Kelly Walter propelled the UIndy women's basketball team to a 72-57 win at Saint Joseph's to close out the regular season.
Following a familiar formula, the Greyhounds (22-7, 13-5 GLVC) dropped nine triples in the win, with six coming from Walter, tying a career high. The victory sealed a bye for UIndy in the Great Lakes Valley Tournament, and was the 14th time the Hounds hit at least nine 3-pointers this season.
The Pumas (6-20, 3-15) still had a chance to gain a spot in the GLVC Tournament, but were scorched by a Greyhound team that shot .480 from the floor (24 of 50).
SJC hung around for much of the first half, keeping the Hounds within sight, but a flurry of late three-pointers widened the gap prior to the halftime break.
Holding a slim 25-21 lead with just over five minutes left in the half, the Greyhounds sank four triples as part of a 17-5 run down the stretch. The Pumas got a last-second half-court heave from Kiki Lyons to fall, bringing the halftime score to 42-29.
Walter connected on four of her six 3-pointers in the first, leading all scorers with 12 at the break.
Fighting for their postseason life, the Pumas connected on two consecutive threes out of the half and then held UIndy scoreless for over five minutes, cutting the lead back to single digits.
With 11:15 remaining,
Kirsten Gliesmann dropped in a layup to break the cold spell, and ended up starting a 16-2 run for the Greyhounds.
The spurt, which saw UIndy's lead swell to 66-43, featured a three-pointer from
Rose Savela around the midway point of the half. It marked the 222nd three of the season, breaking the team's single-season record and making this the most prolific three-point shooting team in program history.
Another milestone was celebrated on the sidelines as Coach
Constantin Popa won his 60th game at the helm of the Greyhounds. He's the fifth coach in program history to reach that mark, and just the second to do so in the first three seasons (LeAnn Freeland, 2007-10).
Princess German finished with 18 points, sinking a career-high 10 free throws. Gliesmann totaled six points and a game-high nine boards, and
Erin Murphy dished a career-high eight assists. Savela and
Dajana Jovanovic each corralled six rebounds for the Hounds.
UIndy will be off until the second round of the GLVC Tournament, which kicks off March 6 in Evansville, Ind., at the Ford Center.
