Greyhounds swept in non-conference doubleheader at Drury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The UIndy baseball team fell in an 0-2 hole to start their non-conference weekend series at Drury Friday, dropping a doubleheader by scores of 6-1 and 7-3.

GAME ONE: Drury 6, UIndy 1

Drury (3-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, totaling three hits and capitalizing on a Greyhound fielding error. Colton Jones and Emilio Villanueva tagged UIndy starter Matt Kaplanis for back-to-back hits to leadoff the inning, and they were brought in by Nick Thimesch and Payton Reed.

Drury added two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

UIndy (3-5) scattered six hits on Drury starter Kevin Sweeney (1-1), but couldn't string together a productive inning until the top of the seventh, when Dan Ritchie drove in Dan Eliopulos to bring UIndy within 4-1. The Greyhounds recorded an out at third base and left two runners stranded to end any threat in the inning.

Kaplanis (1-2) struck out four and walked one in five innings of work on the mound. Aaron Gregory pitched three innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits.

GAME TWO: Drury 7, UIndy 3

In the nightcap UIndy jumped out to take an early lead by scoring twice in the opening frame. With the bases loaded and two outs, Eliopulos delivered a two-run single up the middle.

The Panthers matched the Hounds' two runs in the bottom of the first, scoring twice on three hits off of Jordan Tackett (0-3). The UIndy freshman pitcher avoided further damage by striking out Ryan Colombo with the bases full.

The Greyhounds regained the lead in the third when Zach Jacobs took Drury starter Will Landsheft (1-1) deep for his third homer of the season. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Panthers took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on RBIs from Luke Tewes and Columbo.

Despite the early offensive success, the Hounds managed just one hit after Jacobs' homerun in the top of the third. Landsheft struck out eight UIndy batters in six innings on the mound.

The series continues Saturday at 11 a.m. with a single nine inning game, with the finale scheduled for Sunday.
