Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – New Greyhounds
Lynsey Hazelwood and
Kacee Salyers led the UIndy volleyball squad past a pesky Drury Panthers team in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-14, 31-29) to open the home slate Saturday.
Hazelwood – a transfer from UT-Martin – finished with a collegiate career-high 19 kills on a stellar .389 (19-5-36) clip, while Salyers – a true freshman from Stousville, Ohio – racked up a team-high 14 digs to go along with eight kills and a .353 (8-2-17) hitting percentage.
The win over the Panthers (5-1, 0-1 GLVC) also gave the Hounds (2-4, 1-0 GLVC) a victory in their first Great Lakes Valley Conference match.
UIndy faced little adversity in the first two sets, trailing just once (0-1 to start the second). The Greyhounds hit .218 to Drury's .038 in the two games, but the Panthers turned in a .357 hitting performance in the third and nearly forced a fourth set.
Trailing 23-17, the Panthers reeled off a 7-1 run to knot the game at 24. UIndy put Drury on match point six separate times, but it wasn't until Hazelwood slammed home the kill up 30-29 that the Crimson and Grey escaped with a win.
Senior
Arielle Knafel totaled eight kills in the win, and sophomore
Becca Lira finished with seven to bolster the Hounds' attack.
Senior
Meghan Binkerd dished out a season-high 41 assists and tallied 10 digs for her third double-double of the young season. Fellow senior
Kimberly Trojan had 10 digs and five assists.
UIndy finished with 50 total kills – most this season – and a .267 (50-19-116) team hitting percentage – second highest so far.
The Greyhounds finish the weekend against Missouri S&T Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Ruth Lilly Center.
