Volleyball ends Tampa Classic with losses to highly-ranked opponents

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 24 UIndy volleyball team (1-3) opened up their second day at the Tampa Classic against No. 13 Ferris State, falling 3-1, before finishing the evening in a 3-0 loss against host and No. 2 Tampa.

The Greyhounds opened the day against Ferris State - the squad that ended UIndy's 2013 season in the NCAA Midwest Regional second round. Despite taking the opening set, the Hounds eventually fell to the Bulldogs 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 30-28, 25-16).

The opening-set victory featured 36 attacks and 17 kills from the Hounds. UIndy kept the lead for the majority of the time, only losing it twice by one point.

A large asset to the Hounds match was Arielle Knafel with 41 attacks and 17 kills. Other contributors included Julia Watkins with 9 kills, and Lynsey Hazelwood and Hailey Brown with 6 kills each.

Contributing a large amount of digs included libero Kimberly Trojan (26), setter Meghan Binkerd (19), and Hazelwood (15). Binkerd totaled 37 assists for the Hounds.

Host and second-ranked Tampa ended the Classic with a 3-0 sweep over the Greyhounds with scores of 25-19, 25-18, and 25-23.

Although the Hounds fell to the Spartans, they held their own. During the first and third sets, UIndy and Tampa were head-to-head. At the closing of the first set, UIndy led in attacks with 35 total. The Spartans were only a mere 2 attacks behind.

Leading the Greyhounds in attacks for the match was Knafel (24), and right behind her was Hazelwood (22). Although Knafel led in attacks, Watkins led in kills (10).

Greyhounds Binkerd added 26 assists to her record. Trojan contributed 13 digs and Brown added 10.

Marissa Lisenbee led the Spartans with 36 attacks and 17 kills. Setter Kahley Patrick added 43 assists for Tampa.

Another ranked squad awaits the Hounds in their next match when UIndy travel to No. 17 Wheeling Jesuit Sep. 10.
