Warriors overpower Greyhounds on Thursday night

Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team wrapped up a short two-game homestand on Thursday night, taking on the unbeaten Warriors of Wayne State University.

The Greyhounds and Warriors battled in a tightly-contested matchup for the first 15 minutes of the game but a 15-6 run by the visitors right before halftime and a 61.3% effort from the floor in the second half gave Wayne State a 93-71 win.

Senior Princess German led the Greyhounds (0-4) in scoring for the fourth straight game, pouring in a game-high 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting, going 3-for-6 from deep and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Juniors Nicole Anderson (16 pts) and Nariman Jaber (10 pts) also finished in double-figures for the Hounds.

Wayne State (3-0) had four players reach double-digits with Brittany Streetman's 20 points leading the way. The Warriors finished the game connecting on 54.7 percent (35-for-64) of their field goals, knocking down 50 percent (8-for-16) of their threes and 60 percent (15-for-25) of their free throw attempts on the night.

"We did a little bit better on the offensive side of the ball tonight, but defensively we had trouble limiting quality shots," Head coach Constantin Popa told WICR. "We had a few kids step up and give us good minutes tonight, but we're still searching for consistency from everyone in our rotation. We were a little more aggressive on the offensive end tonight and that was a real focus for us after the last game. But we need to find a way to take that aggression on one end of the floor and make sure we keep it at the other end going forward."

Wayne State opened the game on a 7-2 run, but the Hounds used their aggressiveness on the offensive end to get to the line and keep the game close. UIndy knocked down six straight free throws and got a layup from Jaber right before the end of the first to make it 17-15 Warriors after one.

Back-to-back Warrior buckets to open the second half pushed the lead up to seven, but the Hounds answered with a 7-2 run to close the gap to 25-22 at the second quarter media timeout. But the punishing inside attack of the Warriors proved to be too much the rest of the first half as Wayne State outscored the Hounds 18-11 over the final 5:33 of the first half to take a 43-33 lead into the break.

The Warriors would see their lead shrink to single digits only once in the second half, pouring in 50 points over the final 20 minutes.

UIndy knocked down 46.3 percent (25-for-54) of their field goals on the night, going 6-for-20 from three and 15-for-17 from the charity stripe. Both Jaber (10 pts) and Emily Thomas (8 pts) set new career highs in scoring on Thursday night.

Rebounds were 36-24 in favor of the Warriors with Jaber's six leading all Greyhounds. Shannon Wilson led all players on the boards, grabbing nine missed shots for the visitors.

Wayne State held a 23-13 advantage in the turnover battle and made the Hounds pay at the other end, converting 33 points off UIndy mistakes.

Next up for the Greyhounds is a trip to Midland, Mich. on Saturday (Nov. 21), when they will look for their first win of the year against the Timberwolves of Northwood University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
