ticketsON TAPRiding a seven-game win streak, the 18th-ranked Greyhounds look to clinch a fourth straight outright GLVC title with a win versus visiting Missouri S&T Saturday on Senior Night.
SENIOR NIGHTOn this, the final regular-season home game of the year, UIndy will recognize its 11 senior student-athletes:
Connor Barthel,
Josh Bass,
Lee Campbell,
O'rion Elder,
Reece Horn,
Mitch Huppert,
Daniel Lee,
Kevin Mason,
Chris Massaro,
Hayden Skirvin and
Austin Vogt.
Still with two regular-season games to go, this group has helped the Hounds to a stellar 37-8 (.822) record the previous four years, already passing the previous school record of 36 wins in a four-year period, set by last year's senior bunch. They have also led UIndy to four consecutive conference titles, a program first.
GLVC FOUR-PEATThe aforementioned fourth straight GLVC championship happened last week when UIndy's win at William Jewell conspired with Missouri S&T's loss to Southwest Baptist to clinch a share of the league title for the Hounds. UIndy will need one more win in their final two regular season games to win the 2015 crown outright.
HOMELAND SECURITYThe Greyhounds have amassed an impressive 28-5 (.848) record at Key Stadium since Head Coach
Bob Bartolomeo took over in 2010. That span includes a 15-1 mark versus GLVC competition at home.
ABOUT MISSOURI S&TThe Miners entered play last weekend just one game back of the Greyhounds in the GLVC standings, but a 46-42 home hiccup versus Southwest Baptist put them two back with two to play. Trailing 42-23 early in the second half, the visiting Bearcats scored the game's final 23 points, including the go-ahead touchdown by GLVC-leading-rusher Bubba Jenkins with six minutes to play.
HOUNDS vs. MINERSUIndy is 3-0 all-time versus Missouri S&T, including a 34-3 win in the teams' only previous meeting at Key Stadium (2013).
Last year, the Hounds went to S&T and employed a particularly stingy defense to earn a
30-12 victory. UIndy limited the Miners to 158 total yards, lowest of any of its opponents all season. Only one of S&T's 14 offensive drives went more than 19 yards, as it converted just two of 14 3rd-down attempts.
UIndy rushed the ball 53 times, led by
Matt Ripp's 131 yards on 21 carries.
Derrick Bryant had two of the Hounds' four sacks.
LAST TIME OUTThe Greyhounds defeated William Jewell,
63-35, in Liberty, Mo., last Saturday, avenging their one and only GLVC loss since the conference began sponsoring football in 2012. Nearly a year after falling 27-24 to the Cardinals at home, UIndy amassed its highest point total in 87 years, second only to the ridiculous 97 points it hung on Oakland City way back in 1928.
Running backs
Tuwan Payton (3) and
Andrew Walker (5) accounted for eight UIndy touchdowns on the day, with the latter matching the program's single-game record for rushing TDs in a game (5, Kenny Gillum, 1986).
TOUCHDOWN TOTALAfter notching a gaudy nine rushing TDs in the past two games combined, Walker now sits at 16 for the season, first in the GLVC and second in the UIndy annals to the 19 rushing touchdowns tallied by Klay Fiechter in 2012. His 22 career rushing scores are already good for seventh in program history.
HORN'S HISTORIC DAYWideout
Reece Horn notched his third career 200-yard receiving day on the way to breaking four records last week. The fifth-year senior from nearby Carmel, Ind., compiled 17 catches for 209 yards, breaking both the school and conference mark for receptions in a single game. He also surpassed UIndy's career receiving-yards record while becoming the first-ever Greyhound with two 1,000-yard-receiving seasons to his credit.
Horn now has his sights set on a pair of UIndy single-season benchmarks. Former-teammate Mar'Quone Edmonds amassed school records of 99 catches for 1,335 yards in 2012. Horn enters the week with 78 receptions for 1,100 yards.
SATURDAY SHOOTOUTLast weekend's offensive shootout at Jewell saw the teams combine for a whopping 1280 total yards, including 630 from the Hounds. That sum represents UIndy's highest number of total yards in a game since gaining a school-record 704 yards in a 59-52 overtime win versus Michigan Tech in 2004.
ROGAN'S RETURNLast week, junior cornerback
Korey Rogan became the sixth different Greyhound to record an interception this season. With the Cardinals threatening in the third quarter, Rogan picked off Jewell QB Nick West in the end zone and returned it 89 yards before finally getting brought down. The play marked the longest INT return by a Greyhound since Chris Volz took one the full 100 yards for a TD versus Mercyhurst in 2000.
PERCENTAGE POINTSThe stellar performances kept coming for the Hounds last weekend, not the least of which was
Connor Barthel's composure in the pocket. The senior QB completed an amazing 26-of-28 passes for a career-high 367 yards and a touchdown.
Even more amazing is Barthel's career completion percentage at William Jewel. The local product will finish his career a jaw-dropping 45-for-48 (.938) in two trips to Jewell. Not surprisingly, Barthel is UIndy's all-time leader in completion percentage at .678.
SOUPER SENIORFour-year starter
Lee Campbell has proven to be one of the top defensive lineman in UIndy history. The Greenwood, Ind., product has 35.0 tackles for a loss on his career resume, good for fifth all-time at UIndy. Meanwhile, his season total of 14.0 is good for second in the GLVC as well as a share of ninth on UIndy's all-time single-season list.
BALL SECURITYWith its seventh game of the season without a turnover last week, UIndy took over sole possession of first among all Division II teams in fewest turnovers. The Greyhounds have just four giveaways all season (2 lost fumbles, 2 interceptions), one less than second-place Fort Lewis and Wayne State (Neb.). The next-closest GLVC team in the category is McKendree, whose nine turnovers rank 12th in D-II.
REGION ROUND-UPFor the second straight week, the Greyhounds find themselves positioned at No. 7 in the Super Region Four rankings (see below). The Hounds are clinging to the final playoff position, as new this season is the addition of a seventh postseason team to each region's bracket. The 2015 playoff field will be announced Sunday, Nov. 15.
Â
UIndy is one of 45 teams to compete in Super Region Four, including members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC), Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC), Lone Star Conference (LSC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), as well as the emerging Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
Undefeated Ferris State of the GLIAC claimed the top spot this week, followed by a pair of Lone Star Conference schools in Texas A&M-Commerce and Midwestern State. The Greyhounds, who are unbeaten in Division II play, are the only GLVC team in the top 10.
Key regional match-ups this week include Michigan Tech at Ashland and Colorado Mesa at Colorado State-Pueblo.
