Greyhounds rush past Cardinals in ESPN3 game

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team (4-5, 3-3 GLVC) put on a good face for the nation Saturday night, handing visiting William Jewell a decisive 34-12 defeat in Key Stadium. The Greyhounds' first national broadcast in two years, the contest was streamed live on ESPN3 and the ESPN app.

The Hounds imposed their will in the second half, holding the Cardinals (0-9, 0-7) scoreless while outgaining them 219 -78 in total yardage. Up just two at the break, UIndy went to the ground game, handing the ball off 29 times in the second half alone. Junior Andrew Walker racked up 114 of his season-high 157 rushing yards in the final half while scoring a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to seal it.

Linebackers Derrick Bryant and Rob Dury hit matching milestones Saturday, as both eclipsed triple digits in tackles for the season. Both compiled a team-high 11 stops on the night, as each remained in the top 10 in Division II in tackles per game.

The Greyhounds needed just 72 seconds to get in the scoring column. After receiving the opening kickoff, UIndy started the game with a 34-yard rush from Walker, and two plays later saw Malik Higgins haul in a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Stancombe.

The Hounds would not score again until their final drive of the half, however. In the meantime, Jewell managed three consecutive scoring drives, connecting on two short field goals before finding the end zone – but missing the point-after – to take a 12-7 edge early in the second quarter.

With less than six minutes remaining in the half, UIndy orchestrated an 11-play, 70-yard drive to take the lead, 14-12 – ultimately for good. The series was capped by a diving catch in the end zone by Garrett Willis, good for his fifth TD of the year.

The Hounds maintained the momentum after intermission, especially on the defensive side. UIndy forced three-and-outs on four of the first five Jewell possessions of the second half.

Meanwhile, the Greyhound offense slowly upped the lead. Junior Brad Schickel connected on field goals 35 and 38 yards to make it 20-12 before Walker found the end zone twice down the stretch to put it away.

The Hounds totaled four sacks, with two coming from sophomore Lucas Rice. Senior Korey Rogan had two pass break-ups and a late interception.

Offensively, Stancombe finished 12-for-24 passing for 172 yards and two scores. Willis had six catches and Higgins five.

The Greyhounds have just two games remaining on the 2016 slate. They'll travel to Rolla, Mo., next Saturday to face Missouri S&T before coming home for Senior Day versus in-state Saint Joseph's Nov. 12.

NOTES
Bryant and Dury are the first pair of Greyhounds with 100-plus tackles in the same season since 2012 … The game's first turnover did not come until midway through the fourth quarter when Bryant forced a fumble and Dury recovered it … Tuwan Payton entered the game just nine yards shy of the single-season school record for kickoff return yards. The Cardinals kicked away from him all night, however, and thus he did not get a single return chance ... Stancombe has thrown for two touchdowns and zero interceptions in each of his three starts on the year.
