Defense instrumental in 16-6 win at S&T

ROLLA, Mo. – In its final road game of the season, the UIndy football team (5-5, 4-3 GLVC) evened its record on the year with a hard-fought win at Missouri S&T Saturday, downing the host Miners, 16-6. The Greyhound defense limited S&T to the lowest scoring output by a UIndy opponent in three years.

The Miners (4-6, 3-4) came into the day averaging 33 points per game, but the miserly UIndy defense yielded just a pair of field goals. The Hounds held two previous opponents to seven points this year, but Saturday marked the first time they did not surrender a touchdown since shutting out Kentucky Wesleyan in October of 2013.

In a seven-point game early in the fourth quarter, S&T came up with a big third-down sack followed by a 19-yard punt return to take over in Greyhound territory. The Miners moved the ball just inside the red zone to set up a short field goal, but sophomore d-lineman Lucas Rice got a paw on the attempt to keep it 13-6 UIndy.

The Hounds flipped the field position with a 33-yard sliding catch by Garrett Willis and a stellar punt by Brad Schickel to pin S&T at its own five. UIndy forced another Miner three-and-out to take possession at midfield halfway through the final period. Another long pass to Willis – this time a 24 yarder – put the Hounds in business. Though they eventually could not punch it in on 1st & goal from the five, Schickel's chip shot made it a two-score game with less than five minutes remaining.

With two timeouts in hand, S&T needed two quick scoring drives to at least force overtime, but Robert Williams garnered his second career interception before the home team could manage another point, allowing UIndy the salt away the remaining 84 seconds.

Senior DB Korey Rogan also had a pick, with his coming late in the first half. The Indy native now has seven INTs heading into his final collegiate contest, good for highest total for a Hound since 1996.

Meanwhile, junior Tuwan Payton broke off a 52-yard kickoff return in the first quarter to break the school record for kickoff return yards in a single season, surpassing the former mark of 609 set by Ryan Forney in 2009.

Quarterback Bryce Stancombe finished 16-for-32 for 201 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions. His TD pass – the lone touchdown of the game – went to sophomore Malik Higgins in the second quarter. Andrew Walker led all players with 76 rushing yards on 21 carries, while Willis amassed a game-high 94 receiving yards.

Senior linebacker Rob Dury led the Hounds with nine tackles and a sack, and Schickel finished with three field goals.

The Greyhounds' season finale comes at home next week when they host in-state Saint Joseph's Saturday, Nov. 12. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET, with Senior Day festivities preceding the game.
