CHARLOTTE, NC –
After the men competed yesterday against two of the top teams in the nation, the Greyhound women faced off against both Queens and Wingate on Sunday. Similar to the men, the meet was swam in short-course meters, different that the usual distance of short-course yards. After the final race, the ladies secured a win against Wingate, a top-10 team in the DII, and a loss to Queens. The final scores against the two teams were UIndy 113.5, Wingate 112.5; and Queens 158.5, UIndy 67.5.
"Our ladies did a great job competing today," stated head coach
Jason Hite, "Coming here and getting a win versus a top-10 program like Wingate is impressive. What was even more impressive is the energy the women raced with and how they supported each other."
The Greyhounds kicked off the first race with a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. On a time of 4:24.97, the team of
Maddisen Lantz,
Alaina Joyce,
Darian Murray and
Krystal Caylor swam well.
Laura Boardman started the individual events with a terrific race of her own, putting down a 9:11.80 in the 800 free for a third-place finish.
What could have been one of the best races for the Greyhounds came in next in the 200 free, where Caylor touched the wall second overall on a time of 2:09.17. Right behind her was her teammate
Danielle Wood, as Wood placed third in the event on her time of 2:10.09.
Edda Skoric led the way for the Greyhounds in the 100 back, as the time of 1:05.48 brought her a fifth-place spot in the event.
Freshman
Alaina Joyce was the next up for the Greyhounds, as she placed fourth in the 100 breast on a 1:15.47 time. Murray followed suit with a quick race of her own, finishing the 200 fly third overall with a finish of 2:21.11. Two more Greyhounds stepped up in the 50 free, as
Stefanie Haholiades plugged in a fourth place, :27.01 swim, and
Kirsten Votava touched the wall in :26.91 seconds for third overall.
In the next event, both Caylor and Haholiades stepped up in the 100 free to both place top five in the event. Caylor's swim of :58.8 landed her a second-place finish, and Haholiades got fifth on a 1:00.04 time. In another spectacular fashion, the 200 back proved to be a strong Greyhound race. Skoric took charge and placed second on a 2:21.83 finish, and Wood took another third-place tag on her 2:22.28 swim.
Joyce brought together another exciting swim in the 200 breast, as the freshman tied for second on her swim of 2:41.02. The 400 free included a quick swim of 4:30.13 for Boardman, as she took third place overall. Murray and Votava then swam excellent races in the 100 Fly, as Murray placed second on her 1:04.23, and Votava earned fourth for her 1:05.25 swim.
The final set of events included a strong 200 IM performance for Caylor. Her time of 2:23.17 gave her a finish of second overall in the event. For the final event, the 200 free relay, the squad of Haholiades,
Veeanna Edwards, Lantz, and Votava combined for a third place, 1:49.0 finish to the meet.
"The meet was close all the way until the end," said junior captain
Darian Murray, "We stepped up under pressure, went after it every race, and won key events – especially the 200 free relay at the end – so we could walk out with a win."
Jason Hite later explained that bigger and better things were coming for the Greyhound women: "We are missing six key ladies from this meet as well as our divers, so we're feeling positive about where we are as a team. We look forward to accomplishing our goals when we get everyone healthy."
After an exciting weekend in North Carolina, the Greyhounds will have a couple days left in Charlotte before they travel back home to Indianapolis. The next day that both teams will compete is Friday, Oct. 19, as they will travel to Toledo, Ohio to take on a tri-meet versus Findlay & Toledo. That competition to start at 5 p.m. ET.
